    Jared Weaver new contract quote

"If $85 (million) is not enough to take care of my family and other generations of families then I'm pretty stupid, but how much money do you really need in life?" Weaver said Tuesday. "I've never played this game for the money. I played it for the love and the competitive part of it. It just so happens that baseball's going to be taking care of me for the rest of my life."

An athlete that gets it. discuss.

what more can be said. thats a ton of money but he turned into one of the top AL pitchers if not a top MLB pitcher. He could have tested the FA market, went to NY and got 90-95 million. Im happy he stayed with the team that drafted him. Im actually surprised he didnt go FA, Ithink Boras is his agent.

Didnt Weaver hold out for more money when he was drafted? Or demand so much that he ended up slipping in the first round?

I guess hes grown up, or hes just talking for the sake of talking.

Prince, please remember this when you hit free agency. And yes, his agent is Boras, just like Prince.

I'd take resigning Greinke over Prince.

As would I, can't a man have the best of both worlds?

Probably not, I doubt they could afford both. They already have 40 million in salary obligations for 2013, and that's only Braun, Weeks, Gallardo, Hart and Wolf's buyout. Greinke and Fielder would almost double that.

Good to see, but would have loved to see a good ol' AL East contract war.

I think that was Boras doing ALSO I think he feel because teams didnt want to deal with Boras.

Weaver was originally speculated to be one of the top three overall draft picks in 2004; however, the bonus demands of his agent, Scott Boras, turned off several teams. On draft day, Baseball America asked "Where In The World Is Jered Weaver Going? That is the $10.5 million question. No team is claiming him as a possible first-round pick, and there's no sense that a club is lying in the weeds on him. He and adviser Scott Boras don't seem to be backing down from a reported desire for Mark Prior money, and he could slide through the entire first round altogether."[2] Weaver was drafted in the 1st round (12th pick overall) by the Angels in the 2004 Major League Baseball Draft.

His entire address to the media is really awesome. He just likes it in SoCal and didn't feel like doing "the whole east coast thing" for money.

I found his statement to be really refreshing.

It's good to see. I always enjoy seeing players doing this whether it's in Los Angeles, Seattle, New York, Boston, etc. Taking the hometown discount to play where you enjoy is, like you said, a very refreshing news story.

LOL at "commending" a guy for "only" taking $85 million.

I'm glad he emphasized how this will be able to help provide for several generations of his family.

He could live comfortably the rest of his life off of $5-6 mil of that money. Considering that he's probably got his mansion paid off already, probably even less than that. Without working another day in his life once the contract expires.

His great great great grandchildren should be able to live more than comfortably off of this money.
