Red Sox, Francona Expected To Part Ways

11:35 pm: Francona will ask the Red Sox to decline his option years, reports Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times. A Major League source tells Van Schouwen that Francona "has had his fill of the whole thing" in Boston and wishes to leave.

11:10 pm: Terry Francona is likely on his way out as the manager of the Boston Red Sox, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Francona is scheduled to meet with team management on Friday.

Rosenthal's sources say that it isn't completely certain that Boston will cut ties with Francona, but "it is the likely outcome, in part because he is pressing for a resolution" as to whether or not the Sox will pick up the option years on the manager's contract. The two-year option pickup would pay Francona $8.75MM over the next two seasons, but it seems like Boston will instead pay Francona the $0.75MM buyout. As Rosenthal notes, Francona would be immediately free to go elsewhere, and he cites the Cubs and White Sox as potential suitors.

Francona's departure would put the exclamation point on Boston's unlikely September meltdown. Just three weeks ago it seemed like a lock that Francona's option years would be exercised and he would remain the Red Sox manager for years to come. The club's stunning collapse down the stretch, however, sealed Francona's fate, particularly when stories surfaced of Francona feeling "bulletproof" about his job security and Peter Gammons' claim of "an increasing disconnect" between Francona and Theo Epstein.

In eight years as Boston's manager, Francona has a 744-552 record, reaching the playoffs five times and winning two AL pennants. Though his tenure with the team may have ended on a sour note this September, Francona will always be a legendary figure in Red Sox history for managing the club to World Series championships in 2004 and 2007.

I can't for all of the skeletons to come out of that clubhouse soon.

It appears to be completely on Francona's end which is very strange. I think he's just burnt out.

I think he got fed up with trying to deal with all the personalities in the club house.

                Good riddance.

Most overrated manager in baseball. Terrible at actual managing a ballgame. Nothing more than a media puppet and a door mat for the players to walk all on.

:wut: even with 2 championships? I'd think the guy who helped deliver Boston's first World Series in nearly a century would be king.

Yeah I don't feel the same as Lanteri. I very much appreciate what he did during his tenure. Would have been fine to see him return, but still look forward to some new blood. I don't think he was the problem.

                      From his press conference:

Former Red Sox manager Terry Francona said it was his call to end his eight-year tenure with the Red Sox today.

"It was my decision. I don't know what I want to do. I know I want to stay in the game," he said.

"I think it's time for a new voice here," Francona said. "I think it's the right thing to do for the organization and itself."

He also said the discord in the Red Sox clubhouse was a big factor in the decision.

"I felt frustrated that I was unable to reach guys maybe I've been able to in the past," he said.

He talked about the challenges of a high-profile job in one of the country's most high-profile sports cities.

"It's a wonderful place, but a difficult place to be the manager, and it does wear on you," he said.

He declined to answer a question about a report that some pitchers were drinking beer in the clubhouse on days they were not scheduled to pitch.

I'm sure all Boston fans would love to go back to the glory days of Grady Little.

I miss the tortured Red Sox nation, these winning Sawx fans are much more annoying and ignorant.
I'm not a huge LaRussa supporter, but how to you say that a manager who had led his team to the playoffs 8 out of the last 11 years is the most overrated manager in the league?

OMG guys, pitchers were drinking BEER in the clubhouse on their off days!!??

Pitchers used to drink between innings. Urban Shocker used to bring a flask to the mound.

Grover Cleveland Alexander, after pitching two CG SHO's in Game 2 & Game 6, got hammered before the final game of the World Series, figuring he wouldn't be pitching that day. With the bases loaded and two outs in the 7th, he was called into the game. He stammered to the mound and struck out Tony Lazzeri to end the inning, then pitched two shutout innings to clinch the series.

And look at this ruffian, named Lou Gehrig!

Keith famously opened up a beer during Game 6, thinking they were done for.
