The Worst Contracts in the Game

    ...according to Joe Posnanski.

WOW at Vernon Wells's OBP this year. I realize he's not the player he once was, but .248?!?! Good god.

    Anyway, it's a good read.

From that top 10 most money remaining list, unless the Twins move Mauer to 1B permanently, that is going to become a bad one. You can see it already, his body just can't handle a full-time catching role anymore.

I knew the Lackey and Zito contracts would be on that list. I was also surprised at just how shitty Vernon Wells has become at the plate, wow. Little surprised that Burnett didn't make the list.

Yeah after reading the whole thing I realized it needed its own thread. If only so I could mention that Vernon Wells got paid $20 million to produce a .248 on-base percentage this season.

Oh. And it wouldn't be a bad thing to be paying a skinnier version of Sean Casey $25 million per season for nearly a decade?

We may have to dig out the Mauer contract thread but this was always a big concern for me is how valuable Mauer is as a catcher vs. first basemen. It's a very interesting debate, while he's still a good hitter at 1B, he's not nearly the power hitter you expect out of a corner position and most good teams can't afford to have a 10-15 HR hitter at 1B.

If Jason Bay's contract doesn't make it, damn there are a lot of horrid contracts out there.

Forgot who it was that NAHSTE used to argue with over the Mauer thing and how valuable a 15 HR 1B/DH would be. Those were good times.

Ugh ... I feel sick just looking at Werth's contract ...
The king was shaken. He went up to the room over the gateway and wept.
As he went, he said: "O my son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom!
If only I had died instead of you
O Absalom, my son, my son!"

It's okay, he'll be coming off the books around the same time Bryce Harper is due for an extension. Have fun trying to outbid the Yankees on that one.

What makes the Wells deal 10 times worse is that they traded Mike Napoli for him. Granted, Toronto spun him off to Texas but he had a much better season offensively for the Rangers.

I would also support moving Dunn up the list. He can prove me wrong, but the Richie Sexson comparison is not far off.

Yea, I know. I'm completely open to trading him at this point. I just don't see him hanging around for very long with the Nationals.

If Werth could hit like .260, I could live with it. But this .230 stuff with a pirouetting swing and miss is just so ... blah
