8.8 K/9 but only a 2.16 K/BB. That's not great. I'm guessing they're banking on regression and hoping to get him for full value after a pretty good year.

Don't necessarily agree with it, but at least dangling him to see what you can get is worth it.
It seems to me that Beane is purging players earlier and earlier.

If you look at Oakland, they had the most success when they allowed players to mature together, and then either walk at free agency or be traded right before free agency.

Then Beane got sick of getting little or nothing in return, so he started trading guys maybe a year or two before team control ran out, which seems like a perfectly reasonable strategy.

Now, he seems addicted to constantly reloading, dangling guys three or four years off from free agency, but where does that get you? He is in a constant state of rebuild.

Maybe he's waiting for the right mix before he lets go and let's them mature together? I don't know. He has a group of pitchers that most people really like right now (I think a few of them are a bit overrated, but that's not the point), so wouldn't this be the time? Then again, he purged Haren/Blanton/Harden group that came after his first group of big pitchers, so who knows.

Yeah it's ridiculous. He probably should have let that Carlos Gonzalez/Andre Ethier thing breathe a bit more. Might have been a solid nucleus, I'd think.

It seems like his position prospects and pitching prospects have been developing on staggered schedules for a decade. He can't get a solid young group of both at the same time. That's mainly due to trading guys prematurely, but also because he's got a pretty horrendous trade record, period.

Brewer's offseason could turn into a disaster really quick here.

Stinks they missed on Pujols...but it's probably for the best. They sign Buehrle and can pick up another player and STILL be under what they would of paid Pujols...good move

Not really. Two 5 year 100 million contracts =/= 1 10 year 200 million contract.

Who is the other 100M player? Buehrle got like $58M.

They should just go all in on Fielder and make a run the next three years with what they have. Worry about later, later. Stop trading the kids away for a year or two and build the system back up.

                            I simplified the numbers.

They offered 22 million a year to Pujols, and Buehrle got 14.5. Just because Buehrle's contract is a fraction of Pujols for total money, doesn't mean they have room for another contract that big. Loria doesn't care about what money is due in ten years, odds are he won't own the team then, and the GM is even more likely to be gone.

gotcha. I see your angle now.

Supposedly the Wilson 6-year deal is still on the table, so these fuckers are printing money it seems.
