Shutup warner, you're too conservative. I'd be ecstatic if my team traded for a baller ass pitcher and was in win now mode. It's not like those were your prospects anyways, just enjoy the ride.

I'm just excited about Rizzo being available in a trade now. No way Alonso plays LF in Petco.

You didn't give up too much. You gave up assets that are more valuable to other teams than they presently are to your club. That's dealing from surplus to fill a need.
lol, yeah its funny how Reds fans get about stuff, I mean I honestly don't see a better option out there, and those guys are the prime guys we had to move, I wouldn't want to give up less and get a lesser pitcher for them.

The more I think about it, the more I hate it for the Reds. I know they traded prospects that were mainly blocked, but Latos was shut down last year due to shoulder problems and they said he has major maturity/mental problems.

He's a great pitcher, but that's a lot to swallow if you are the Reds.

Does Latos make the Reds better than the Brewers/Cardinals? Not sure. They still need to make one more major move, and their bullpen is still pretty bad.

A couple of things I disagree with here.

If you go a couple of pages back, all of the realistic options were laid out. To me, Latos was the best option. He's got the best numbers, he's the youngest, he makes the least money, and he's under team control until 2016. If you don't like him for those other issues, fine, but to me he was still the best option (I suppose you could make a case for Gio Gonzalez, but Beane asked for the same package last week and Jocketty declined, so Jocketty likes Latos better, too).

As for what the Reds gave up, Alonso was obviously going to have to be part of any deal.

Obviously you can trade either Mesoraco or Grandal because you have two of them.

Volquez is a non-entity, and in reality, was more of a salary dump 'you have to take this guy back' type of deal.

I was surprised to see Boxberger, that came from left field, but Jocketty said directly that the Padres weren't doing this without him.

So you have two players who were blocked, who were on the trade block to begin with so that you could get a pitcher of this caliber. Volquez was a dump, and maybe the Padres get lucky, but in reality he had to go and wasn't going to be on the team next year regardless.

So it comes down to Boxberger. If you are Walt Jocketty, whose options were drying up by the day (not a good fit for Jerrjens, A's want too much for Gonzalez, haven't been able to get Shields since July, etc), do you let a chance to get the guy who is the best fit slip away over a AA relief pitcher?

The only major move the Reds have left is to find a closer. They also need a backup veteran SS as Cozart insurance, and maybe a LH 4th OF to platoon with Heisey in LF.

And I don't know why you say the Reds bullpen is bad. Aside from Cordero (who is still in play) it's essentially the same bullpen from the last two years (Bray, Masset, LeCure, and whoever doesnt start among Chapman, Wood, etc), and they've been pretty good. Bray is a top LOOGY, Masset is ok, LeCure is decent, Chapman is Chapman, etc. They just need to find a closer, and the market is in their favor with more guys available than spots to fill.

I personally think Volquez will do well with a change of scenery. Obviously Petco Park is the kind of scenery a pitcher can get used to.

Who the fuck is Norchika Akoi or w/e his name is? Brewers won his rights for a 2.5 mil posting fee.

Reds overpaid, but the deal makes sense for them. With Pujols and Fielder (presumably) leaving the Central and Braun out for (presumably) 50 games, this is a great window for them.

Moving from Petco to Great American would hurt any pitcher, but Latos hasn't been much worse away from home throughout his career. Latos is a good #2 pitcher at best and with Cueto the Reds have a great 1-2 punch.

All it took was a couple Warren G Hardings [lady bligh, cherry coke and red bull] to get me believing in the trade. I'm a fan after more consideration. Initially I thought it might be overpaying, but I realize its not terrible now. This is the Reds window. Who knows how long we will have Votto, and the Central will be down this year with Pujols leaving, Braun out for 50, and possibly Prince leaving [even if he goes to the Cubs, they arent gunna be competing yet] it is good to go for it all. I don't mind giving up Grandal and Boxberger, we have Mesoraco and closers come a dime a dozen in the league.

Alonso is going to be a future multiple time All-Star solely off his bat. The only thing I'm going to hate is I KNOW Volquez is going to put up numbers out there. Change of scenery + pitching in PETCO = revitalized career opportunity. Oh well, he sucked in Cincy.

I'm excited as fuck for Opening Day now.

Look at it this way, Grandal was excess, and Boxberged is a RP. RELIEF PITCHER.

Volquez was done here, lets face it. We all knew it in July. If he turns it around, so be it. He wasnt making our rotation anyway.

Alonso. Yeah, i think he can rake. Left handed Edgar Martinez, best case. But Latos was the best guy on the market and can be a legit stud who isnt going anywhere for four years, and is cheap. Gotta give up something to get something.

Three of the guys we traded were useless to us this year, and we've got a chance at this thing. Glad you came to your senses. I bugged out at first too, but Walt got the best guy out there and when you break it down it makes sense for both sides.

Its like Buster Olney said, if the Reds win the Central this year or next, the trade was an absolute win.

I was watching ESPN last night, and they said "the reds have acquired Mat Latos for a package of players headlined by ace pitcher Edinson Volquez and three minor leaguers."

                          The more you know!

In something somewhat related, I have a friend who texted me something along the lines of "haha Volquez and Latos are basically a wash what a pointless trade".

I can't stand the people who are trying to say this trade was those 4 players + Josh Hamilton for Latos. Fucking stupid.
