    Winter Meetings

Winter Meetings is easily the best part of the off-season. It starts Monday and runs until Thursday. Usually you see most players sign between these days, and a lot of trades usually happen.

What do you want your team to do?

    Brewers:

    - Sign SS Rafael Furcal 3/21
    - Sign 3B Aramis Ramierz 2/24 vesting option on the 3rd year for 12 mil.
    - Sign RP Takashi Saito 1/3 with incentives
    - Sign RP LaTroy Hawkins
    - Sign IF Jerry Hairston Jr 2/4.5
    - Sign Derek Lee 1/5

    Lineup:

    1. Rafael Furcal SS (S)
    2. Nyjer Morgan CF (L)
    3. Ryan Braun LF (R)
    4. Aramis Ramierz 3B (R)
    5. Rickie Weeks 2B (R)
    6. Corey Hart RF (R)
    7. Derek Lee/Mat Gamel (R/L)
    8. Jonathan Lucroy C

    Bench:

    1B: Derek Lee/Mat Gamel
    IF: Jerry Hairston Jr
    2B/3B: Taylor Green
    OF: Carlos Gomez
    C: George Kottaras

    Rotation:

    1. Zack Greinke (R)
    2. Yovani Gallardo (R)
    3. Shaun Marcum (R)
    4. Randy Wolf (L)
    5. Chris Narveson (R)

    Bullpen:

    CL: John Axford (R)
    SU: Takashi Saito (R)
    MR: Zack Braddock (L)
    MR: LaTroy Hawkins (R)
    MR: Kameron Loe (R)
    LR: Manny Parra (L)
    LR: Marco Estrada (R)

I think that team could easily win 88-92 games next year, and the lineup may even be better than last years.

What would you do if you were the GM of your fav. team?

I don't expect much from the Mets but maybe this is the week Reyes makes a decision. The Marlins have been aggressive but you never know. One thing I learned this week is if Miami does get him, the Mets will get a sandwich pick and a 3rd round pick. Ew...

If Reyes can come back for 4years with the 5th as an option at $17 mil per with a no trade clause, I'd be okay.

Perhaps they'll secure a closer in the realm of Capps or Rauch.

Talk with teams about Daniel Murphy, he has no position for the Mets.

Look for a centerfielder so they don't need to give Angel Pagan a contract.

I can hope that Colletti shocks everyone by pulling off some crazy trade, but realistically I'm envisioning the Dodgers being fairly quiet during the meetings.

The most I can really hope for is news on who's putting in bids.

I am going to be doing two of these- one that I wish the Orioles would do and I know that they would be capable of. The second is what I think the Orioles will actually do, and I should get to that tonight or tomorrow. For that one, I will actually include contract values, etc, because of the likelihood of it happening.

1.) Sign Prince Fielder. The Orioles need a marquee name, and that is Fielder. He would complete the batting order (especially with the team I am getting to) and can play first and also DH at times.

2.) Bring back Luke Scott. In 2010, Scott was the sixth best outfielder in MLB in regards to OPS. He can DH, play left field and play first base and would be huge in the middle of the order.

3.) Sign Michael Cuddyer. Cuddyer would be the starting left fielder, and his versatility will be huge. Cuddyer would also be insurance at second since Brian Roberts may struggle back with his concussion issues.

4.) Trade Adam Jones to Oakland for Gio Gonzalez. The Orioles will likely have to include something else, but the Orioles need pitching and the A's need hitting. Oakland would still control Jones for two more years, and getting Gonzalez would be the Orioles first legit staff ace since Mike Mussina left ten years ago.

5.) Trade Jeremy Guthrie to Minnesota for Denard Span. I do not believe for a second that Span isn't available, and if the Orioles need to replace Jones in center, Span is a great option. Guthrie will be cheap for the Twins to extend next season, and even if they don't, he is the perfect stopgap until Slowey is ready for more responsibility in the rotation.

6.) Sign Roy Oswalt. The Orioles could guarantee him the years he wants, and Oswalt would be a great addition with Gonzalez. He does have durability concerns, but the Orioles should take that risk.

7.) Bullpen issues. Bring back Koji Uehara from Texas, who wants to return to Baltimore. Also, signing Matt Capps to a two year deal as another setup man would be great.

That leaves this as a team that, at the very least, is going to hit .500 which is what the Orioles should be aiming for. It shows that the Orioles can spend money (and they ca) and that they care about putting a great product on the field. So lets take a look at what the team would look like.

        2B Brian Roberts
        SS JJ Hardy
        RF Nick Markakis
        1B Prince Fielder
        3B Mark Reynolds
        DH Luke Scott
        C Matt Wieters
        LF Michael Cuddyer
        CF Denard Span

        SP: Gio Gonzalez
        SP: Roy Oswalt
SP: Jim Johnson (who is going to be converted to the rotation)
        SP: Jake Arrieta
        SP: Zach Britton

        CL: Kevin Gregg
        SU: Koji Uehara
        SU: Matt Capps
        LR: Tommy Hunter

Still, don't expect this. Keep an eye out and I'll post what will actually happen later on.

What I'd like to see from Boston...

Resign David Ortiz. Get it done.

Sign Cuddyer to platoon in RF with Kalish.

Get another closer. I'd rather sign Madson than give up specs in a trade for Bailey.

Talk to Chicago about Matt Garza. Possibly make Garza a part of the Theo compensation, and we throw in say Anthony Ranaudo and Kolbrin Vitek?

I just hope we bring back Jimmy Rollins. No other big moves need to be made at this point.

                My Red Sox Wishlist:
                1. Go get Garza from the Cubs for Kolbrin Vitek and Anthony Ranaudo (agree with Swarly, fucking name changes these days)
                2. Go out and get closer Andrew Bailey, just get it done rather have him then anyone else.
                3. Resign David Ortiz to a 2 year deal with an option for a 3rd

It's what I hope happens this offseason. I don't think any of those moves aside from uehara and cuddyer have any chance of happening

I don't expect much, if anything, to get done for the Sox in the winter meetings, but in order of priority:

                        1) Acquire a veteran right fielder. Michael Cuddyer would be my ideal guy here.
                        2) We need starting pitching. But we shouldn't be overpaying or committing to any long term deals at this point. I would be ecstatic if we were one of the 14 teams interested in Buehrle, but that doesn't appear to be the case at all. Signing Kuroda to a 1-year deal for the $ he's looking for wouldn't be a bad idea.
                        3) Bullpen. Given that the Sox didn't resign Papeplbon, I find it highly unlikely that they're going to splash out for a guy like Madson, or K-Rod, so unless a trade for Bailey is in the works, I expect no movement here as well.
                        4) Ortiz. Honestly, I've been on the side of wanting to see Ortiz gone prior to last season. I stand by that if keeping him means having to offer him anything longer than a 2 year deal. In a perfect world it would be a 1 year deal with a team option for a 2nd, but good luck getting Ortiz to agree to that.

So, basically, as I said, I expect nothing to happen for the Sox at the winter meetings.

Matt Capps would be a legit option for the Red Sox to sign to the pen. What are the rumors about Bard moving to the rotation? It seems that they think that might be the cheaper option to go for a starter, and then make a signing like Capps for the bullpen where it is less money and less risk/higher reward.

Mets are out of the Reyes sweepstakes...Marlins supposedly offered 6years, $111 mill

it's actually Reportedly 6 years 106, 7th year option for 22 million (not sure how it becomes guaranteed)
