    Astros sign Jack Cust...why?

OK, can anybody explain this transaction?

The Astros already have Carlos Lee & Brett Wallace clogging up 1B and unable to play elsewhere. Now the Astros essentially have three DH's, which gives them no bench flexibility. And oh by the way, they are still in the NL.

Cust got two years, so I guess the assumption is that he will DH next season? That's great....but what does he do this season? And is Jack Cust really such a hot commodity that the Astros felt the need to lock him up now, so that he can DH next year, when he's 35?

    I'm baffled by this.

Does anybody here follow the Astros?

Second year of deal is a club option.

So basically, Cust will sit around for a year, PH against righties like a poor man's (as is completely destitute, several feet under the poverty line, too broke for food stamps) version of Jason Giambi, and if he manages to bat .230 or better, they'll bring him back to DH in 2013.

      This can't be right.

Been sitting here for a few minutes trying to write something about Jack Cust getting a two year deal. It's impossible.

I realize range factor isnt the most reliable fielding stat, but I looked up Carlos Lee's RF as a 1B and spit out some Coke Zero:

          league RF/G: 9.28
          Carlos Lee RF/G: 7.71

And that's a 105 game sample size spread over four seasons, so yeah. He is pretty god damn terrible, if you didn't realize it by now. I doubt you can find many guys in the low 8.00's let alone the fucking 7.00's.

Sounds like my team in our fantasy baseball league.

I started a franchise with Houston in MLB The Show 12. First order of business was cut Jack Cust and trade Carlos Lee+Wandy Rodriguez for Andrew McCutchen.
