Marco Scutaro traded to the Rockies

Can we talk about what a terrible trade this was for Boston?

Traded a three win player, at the scarcest position in MLB for a pitcher who had the worst single AAA season in the history of baseball.

How the fuck did Boston have two competent every day short stops going into the off season, an off season when a ton of teams were desperate to find a SS, and only ended up with a few random reliever arms for the both of them? The fuck?

And how the fuck do the Braves let Lowry and now Scutaro go for relative peanuts? Pastornicky is going to fall flat on his face and we're going to be searching for a solution by the end of May. Guarantee it.

While I'm glad we freed up the money to try and get Oswalt, the lack of depth now at that position worries me. Aviles/Punto isn't going to cut it and Jose just is not ready to hit big league pitching. I really wish we hadn't dealt Lowrie.

I feel the same way. Scutaro was #1 on my wish list at the start of the offseason. At first it appeared he was staying in Boston, and now he's traded for a bag of chips.

        Very disappointing as a fan.

I'm definitely not impressed by Cherington. He couldn't stand up to the ownership when selecting his manager, and has made two terrible trades. The only good thing I can say about him is he didn't give Madson or Papelbon a ridiculous contract like Philadelphia did.

He also failed to get any compensation for Theo leaving for the Cubs. Or at least it doesn't look like he will at this point. Terrible offseason.

Let me show you what Nick Punto is capable of:

I have no problem with any of Cherington's moves so far this offseason.

I'm a big fan of Valentine so I got no problem with him not getting his choice there.

I'm very happy that he didn't pay Papelbon or Madson the absurd amount of money they were asking for. No closer is worth that kind of money.

The Bailey trade was an absolute steal for the Sox. We gave the A's nothing for an all-star caliber closer. The Melancon trade was solid as well. Lowrie was dogshit for all but one month of last season, and he spends more time on the DL than he does on the field, and he's a well below average defensive shortstop. No brainer to trade him for bullpen help.

The Scutaro thing obviously is a straight up money thing. Let's be honest here. He's Marco Scutaro. He's not exactly the most irreplaceable player in Red Sox history here. He had an injury issue that's going to be a recurring thing, and has really limited him defensively. Obviously it's a downgrade going to Aviles/Punto but clearing up the payroll to sign Ross (which is now official) is a smart move.

Obviously, I'm not thrilled with the fact that we missed out on Kuroda, or any other free agent pitching for that matter, but we could have done a lot worse this off-season.

To me there is not a huge difference between Aviles/Punto/Scutaro/Lowrie. Scutaro is probably the best of that bunch, but he's one of those guys that sabermetrics treats better than he really is imo. He's just a guy. With that said, they got nothing for him.

The Lowrie deal though, that was a fucking steal for Boston. Melancon is good.
