ROSTER UPDATE...Reds tinker with depth, fortify Quad-A roster

    Changes in RED

    C Hanigan
    1B Votto
    2B Phillips
    3B Frazier
    SS Cozart
    RF Bruce
    CF Choo
    LF Ludwick

    C Mesoraco
    OF Paul
    OF Heisey
    UTIL Donald
    UTIL Hannahan

Emmanuel Burris (FA - SF Giants '12), Henry Rodriguez, Scott Rolen (FA), Cesar Izturis (FA - Wash '12) could challenge for UTIL spots. Reds sign C Miguel Olivo, who is expected to be the #3 catcher and play at Louisville.

    Cueto (1)
    Latos (2)
    Arroyo (3)
    Bailey (4)
    Chapman (5/6)
    ----------
    Leake (5/6)
    LeCure
    Arredondo
    Ondrusek
    Marshall
    Masset
    Broxton
    Hoover
    Simon
    Cingrani (7)
    Armondo Galarraga (8)
    Manny Parra

Five of these pitchers won't make the team. Galarraga is a minor league deal, he is straight SP depth. Parra is a major league deal but I believe he has options. Cingrani is expected to be a starter in AAA, and signing Parra solidifies that.

Rolen needs to decide what he's doing. I read he wants to play, but hopefully it's not for the Reds. Quite frankly I don't even know if we can afford him at this point. His best bet is going to the Dodgers or retiring.

The thing with Rolen, is he would probably be taking Jason Donald's roster spot. That would leave the Reds with no backup middle infielder. Jack Hannahan played 7 games at SS last season, 9 total in his career. He's played a grand total of 2 innings of 2B.

So unless the Reds think Hannahan can play middle infield, particularly SS once per week or so when Cozart gets a blow, there is no place for Rolen on the roster.

Unless, of course, Rolen takes Hannahan's spot, which would be a perfect fit. I would prefer to have Rolen backing up the corners. But the Reds are not going to pay Rolen, and pay Hannahan the $4M in guaranteed money they owe him to go away.

Basically, unless Hannahan blows out a knee or dies or something, I think the odds of Rolen returning are less than 5%. He took too long to figure it out. Reds moved on.

Parra doesn't have any options left.

            Joel Luckhaupt ‏@jluckhaupt
Marshall & Broxton were only #Reds pitchers with a higher GB% than Manny Parra in '12. The IF defense behind him just improved dramatically.

            Joel Luckhaupt ‏@jluckhaupt
The only thing NOT to like about Parra is his walk rate, but that's why we have Bryan Price and @mackjenkins57

            C'mon Luckhaupt, Parra stinks.

Forget the walks (which are obscene), he gives up a million hits, too. His career WHIP is 1.645. He gives up a ton of runs as a result.

I don't want this guy on the MLB roster. He's slightly more useful than Redmond, because he's a LH RP and the Reds only had Marshall. But he stinks.

Manny Parra is the man. Unfortunately he has always had a terrible infield defense.

                Latos signed a 2 year 11.5M deal.

Dusty talking like Hannahan can play SS. That could make Jason Donald expendable.

Looks like Manny Parra is a lock for the roster. Meh. I still say it's the only mistake Walt made this offseason. This team didn't need him. Plus he's a bum.

Lots of speculation that Chapman will start the year in short relief (possibly closing games), then work his way up to long middle relief, then start games as they move towards the second half. They have an innings target, but due to the PR disaster that was the Nats last year, they aren't going to release it publicly and supposedly only Jocketty, Baker, and Price are privy to it. This is closer to what the Braves did last season, which is good, because if you expect to contend you can't do what the Nats did, that was a disaster.

Can't be that upset about that loss. It's game 1 of 162 and we asked Hoover to throw more than he ever has in a game. Let's get em Wednesday

So with Ludwick out for awhile, looks like BP goes back to cleanup and Cozart back into the 2hole.

Short list of call ups? And what will it say about Heisey?

                                Heisey will start.

They only have one other OF on the 40-man, but there is an empty spot on the 40-man as well. Names being tossed around are Donald Lutz, Hendry Rodriguez, etc. They can call up an IF because Frazier can play OF in a pinch. We'll know in a few hours.
