    Nats to sign Edwin Jackson

The Nationals haven't finished above .500 since moving to Washington in 2005, but there's reason to expect significant improvement from the 2012 club in light of the team's offseason moves. GM Mike Rizzo continued bolstering his pitching staff today, agreeing to terms with free agent right-hander Edwin Jackson.

The team announced the one-year deal this afternoon, and Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com, who first reported the news (Twitter links), says the agreement is believed to be in the $8-12MM range. The Scott Boras client has to pass his physical for the deal to become official.

The Nationals' projected starting rotation includes Jackson (pictured), Gio Gonzalez, Stephen Strasburg, Jordan Zimmermann and Chien-Ming Wang. John Lannan and Ross Detwiler would provide depth, though Lannan is now on the trade block.

Jackson, 28, posted a 3.79 ERA with 6.7 K/9 and 2.8 BB/9 with a 43.8% ground ball rate in 199 2/3 innings for the White Sox and Cardinals this past season. The hard-throwing right-hander has averaged 208 innings per season with a 3.96 ERA since 2009, but has a career ERA of 4.46 with 6.7 K/9 and 3.7 BB/9 since he debuted with the Dodgers on his 20th birthday in 2003. Jackson ranked sixth on MLBTR’s list of top free agents entering the offseason.

Jackson profiled as a Type B free agent after the season and the Cardinals offered him arbitration. They'll obtain a compensatory draft pick in the supplementary first round of this year's amateur draft, but it won't come from the Nationals.

Nationals to sign Edwin Jackson, pending a physical

edit- Gabe beat me to the link by two minutes, but here's my take:

The deal will be for one-year, financials were undisclosed. Something around 8-10 mill seems reasonable however.

Good pick up for the Nats, IMO. Eddie Jack is a solid innings eater and his average velo was third-best in the league last year among qualified starters. They waited out the field and ended up with a nice starter at a fair price.

That's why I went with Gabe over Leftwich. Those extra keystrokes came in handy. I knew I had to be quick with the stealth edit.

I didn't trade for Billy Butler. I traded him away.

                Im still in shock.

Anyway, I guess im the only one who doesnt like Jackson. Walks the ballpark, which sorta negates some of those K's, and throws a million pitches, thus killing your bullpen when he has those disasterous 4 inning outings every fifth start. He's had years where he made 30+ starts and came in under 200 innings. Yuk. I never liked these guys who labor through starts and go 3-2 on every batter. Managers get tired of that shit, thats probably why hes on a new team every year and a half. Someone else falls on love with his velocity, and off he goes.

What happens when the K rate drops? Those walks will really kill him then. On a one year deal, that doesnt matter, but im sure thats part of the reason he had trouble getting a multi year deal.

Great job of roster building by the current regime, Jayson Werth notwithstanding.
Pump them brakes. There are over a dozen studs in the Braves system who are under 24 and have already proven themselves at the big league level. Nats are still waiting on their guys to get their first cup of coffee, meanwhile the Braves' kids have already ordered their entrees. It's gonna be those two teams when the Phils' window closes, and while the Nats have the two best prospects between the two teams, the depth edge would go to Atlanta.

                    Livo to Strasburg
                    Lannan to Gio
                    Zimmermann to Zimmermann
                    Marquis to Jackson
                    Gorzellany to CMW/Det/Lannan

Thats the 2010 rotation to the 2011 rotation

Massive improvements. Nicely done by Rizzo. Also gives some trading chips come the deadline this year.

Of course ... the Nats still can't score runs. But I suppose you can't have everything.

As he went, he said: "O my son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom!
