My bad Gob. I was confusing the front laoded with the fact that there is a $4 million buyout for option in 2015.

#5 – Nationals Acquire Gio Gonzalez For Brad Peacock, Derek Norris, A.J. Cole, and Tom Milone

If you think Gio Gonzalez’s ERA the last two seasons are more indicative of what we should expect going forward, then the Nationals made a nice trade and this will work out well for them. I’m more of the mind that he’s due for a pretty significant step backwards, though, which makes him more of a good pitcher than any kind of ace, and the command problems offer enough risk of collapse to be a real concern. And, for me, the cost of acquiring that kind of high risk arm was too high, especially when you factor in Gonzalez’s Super-Two status, which necessitated a 5 year, $42 million extension to buy out his arbitration years. It’s one thing to give up three good prospects and a potential back-end starter for a guy who provides a lot of value at a low cost, but Gonzalez is no longer all that cheap. The Nationals could have spent $40 million in free agency and walked away with a +3 win player while maintaining depth on the farm. Unless Gonzalez takes a big leap forward, this looks like an overpay to me.
Is it hate on DC day or something?

We got a 26 year old, left handed, 15+ game winner for 8.4 million a year and lost 3 players that were never going to play for the Nats and 1 potential Ace who's still in Single A.

What is he going to do now? Not a whole lot of Irish people in Philly, are there?
The king was shaken. He went up to the room over the gateway and wept.
As he went, he said: "O my son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom!
If only I had died instead of you
O Absalom, my son, my son!"

Jose Reyes would have made my list.....understand it from the Marlins perspective, and if the Mets had held onto him, I would have understood it as well, but over $100 million for a guy who hasn't hit 20 homers yet and who has a history of leg injuries, which along with age, will negate his speed sooner rather than later.

Not saying it is likely, considering Reyes is a few years younger, but there may be a Carl Crawford-esque drop in a couple years.

Like Reyes, I think it goes into a different category. The Marlins have money coming from their new ballpark (so they say) and they went ahead and spent it. I don't agree with the terms of the deal (just look at my post above) but I understand why they did it.

Now for Pujols, he is at least going to be a productive hitter through much of his contract, even if he isn't playing the field. Then, you have this new TV deal that Moreno negotiated that will end up paying for Pujols and Wilson by itself in about two or three years. They definitely overspent, but Moreno had that TV deal to fall back on, as well as his own money, and many rumors suspected that he was saving money for a couple years for a run at Pujols.

I'm sorry I just don't see "holding a spot" for Taylor Green...and he raked in AAA and I felt he'd get a shot at 2B when Weeks went down but they kept trotting out McGhee and other re-treads until Weeks came back.

Yeah you forgot to put in the part where he walks the most batters in the league.

                      15 wins though!

Or that the best thing he had going for him (ERA) is about to balloon now that he no longer has a whole football field of foul territory around him.

I wonder who will be in the Nationals rotation when Strasburg blows his arm out again and Gonzalez is walking the ballpark.

Well they have a lot of pitching depth in the-No they traded those guys for Gonzalez. Lol.

Which is why I think it is stupid for them to consider trading John Lannan. They have a pretty good starter in him, and with him they have six starters. No team is going to make an entire season with their five starters starting 30 plus games, so you need depth. Don't trade him, especially when two of your top three starters- Strasburg and Zimmerman- have recently had TJ surgery.

I actually think that Gonzalez will do well in the spacious park that the Nats have, but that is just me.
