Cameron Maybin Signs 5 year extension with Padres

5 years 25 million, with an option for a sixth year.

Great signing for the Padres, He's still only 24 years old. If he can figure out to hit in PETCO, this will prove to be an outstanding deal.

So if I hit .255 for my career, and average about 8 homeruns for season I can make $25 million dollars? Sign me up.

I'm not sure how the average salary of 5 million a year, for a player worth over 4 wins last year is an overpay.

I get potential is one thing, but how about these teams actually let guys prove their value before they overpay them.
He also stole 40 bags, plays good defense at a premium position and apparently he loves playing in SD and was very receptive to an extension. As for your bigger point, teams ultimately save money in the long run by inking an extension early rather than letting a player hit the open market. Maybin should be able to command more than five million per year from free agency if he continues developing. Small market teams don't have the luxury of waiting on an asset to prove its full value, they have to gamble a bit more in order to keep costs down.

Im not saying it's an overpay, because it's not, but easy with the 4 WAR.

A lot of that is tied to defense, which is suspect to begin with. Maybin is kind of the prototype for why some people don't buy into WAR, because he was pretty much an average player last season, in large part thanks to his high SB totals and good SB%, because he isn't a great OBA guy and has no power.

With that said, he's locked up now on the cheap until he's 30, so they've got themselves a great deal if he gets better.

He had a 4.7 WAR according to fangraphs' defensively generous WAR calculator.

              BR had him at 2.9.
The king was shaken. He went up to the room over the gateway and wept.
As he went, he said: "O my son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom!
If only I had died instead of you
O Absalom, my son, my son!"

This is a great deal even if he stays exactly what he is. He's at the least a competent everyday CF and those are not exactly easy to find in free agency. And the ones that are available are already nearing their decline phase or need to move to a corner. Buying out his first two free agency years for cheap is a great value move that will allow the Pads to spend money elsewhere.

Plus they probably save money by avoiding the three arbitration years. He would have been awarded more than $5 mill at least one of those years.

                  This all makes sense.

He hits well on the road, .294 last season. Hopefully (for me cuz I picked him in the league) this new contract allows him to focus on how to hit in PETCO. I was saying it last night in the chatbox that I feel he's going to have a season like Alex Gordon did last year. We shall see.
