Jason Bay broke a rib on that fall last night. On the DL, they called up 3B Zach Lutz.

He’s a high strikeout, high walk, high-power, guy off to a great start in AAA this year (.333/.419/.556) supported by an unsustainably high .439 BABIP. All the same, in his 303 career AB in AAA he’s hit .304/.387/.521 with an 11% walk rate, 27% strikeout rate, extra-base hits in 10% of his plate appearances and a .393 BABIP.

He’s primarily a third baseman, with 223 professional games at the position, although he’s played a little first (31 games) in the minors. He would probably be a below average defender in the majors at third. I don’t see especially nimble footwork or lightning quick hands. He could play the position, but just end up costing his team some runs if he did it everyday. Obviously, Lutz is not going to displace one David Allen Wright at third base anytime soon for the Mets. Nor, despite Ike Davis’ slow start is he about to bump Davis from first in near future.

Add another player to the body count. Mike Pelfrey is headed to the disabled list with elbow inflamation. A ligament tear has not been ruled out. Adam Rubin says Chris Schwinden will most likely be the person called up to start Friday. Relief pitcher Robert Carson has been called up for the next three days until then.

Adam Rubin says Pelfrey has a partial ligament tear in his elbow and the Mets are preparing to lose him for the rest of the season due to surgery.

They called up Carson to be available in the pen through Thursday, when they're expected to call up Chris Schwinden to start Friday.

The Mets said they will not bring up Familia or Harvey up, not wanting to rush either guy.

In all seriousness, can't expect nothing less than Tommy John for Pelf. Just as the guy starts to find himself and pitch well, this shit happens. It never fails for the Mets...never fails.

Tejada on the DL with a strained quad.

Thole took a hard hit from someone's shoulder on a collision at home plate and was concussed. Fuck what the Mets say, it was clear as day. He'll definitely be gone at least a week, but most definitely longer.

Can't catch a fuckin break.

Still, Jordany Valdespin, just called up, hits a pinch hit 3 run jack off Papelbon to take the lead (his first ML hit). Sooooo sweet.

-Jenrry Mejia made just his 2nd start at Single-A tonight coming off Tommy John surgery and although I don't know his pitch count, he went 6 innings. Gave up 3 hits, 1 solo home run but struck out 7. He had 9 ground ball outs and just 1 flyout.

Apparently, the 22-year old will make a couple more starts before they consider bringing him up to the big league rotation.

OF Darrell Ceciliani is still on the DL with a strained calf and has not played since 4/22.

OF Cory Vaughn through 32 games has 8 HR and 20 RBI. He's only walked 11 times while striking out 32 times. His averages are at .234/.317/.476.

-Jason Bay has gotten the OKAY to resume baseball activities and is looking at a potential return by the end of the month.

-At AAA tonight, Fred Lewis went 3-6 with a single, double and triple (hitting .293 since signing).

Jeurys Familia won his 4th game (now 4-1)…his line: 5.0 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 7 SO with 58 of his 101 pitches for strikes. As long as they intend to keep him as a starter, don't expect him anytime soon until his control improves.

Ironically, the same can be said for Matt Harvey who needs to improve in that area before they consider calling him up to the big league rotation.

12 come back wins so far this season (and 9 blown saves by the bullpen ), this Mets team has proved to be pretty entertaining to watch.

On another note can we do something about Jason Bay, like I don't know dump his body somewhere, maybe leave him in his home country of Canada during this road trip. Seriously though what are we going to do with him when he comes back? There is no room for his struggles right now with Torress, Kirk and Duda holding things down.

David Wright is in straight beast mode right now. .411 average. Currently has 27BB to 21 K's that is nuts considering Wright's habit of striking out the past few years

Bay's gonna be given every chance to play when he's ready IMO. Too much money to sit on the bench. He'll return to LF and unless they want to send Ike down to settle his funk, it's Capt. Kirk to the bench.

I understand the bullpen has been bad, but how many of those are 9th inning blown saves? Team blown save totals are deceiving because of blown leads in the 6th or 7th inning or whatever adding to the total.

A quick look, I only counted games they lost with blown saves by the pen.


1. Mets Lose to Cincy, 6-3
Mets lead 3-2 heading into the top 8 where Jon Rauch gives up 3 runs with D.J. Carrasco giving up another.

2. Mets Lose to Arizona, 5-4
Mets lead 4-2 heading into the top 8 where Jon Rauch comes on with runners on and can't secure the inning, allowing 3 runs to cross home plate (an unearned run attributed to Parnell, and a run each go to Byrdak and Rauch).

3. Mets Lose to Philly, 8-2
Mets lead 2-1 heading into the bottom of the 7th. Ramon Ramirez gives up two runs. In the bottom of the 8th, Manny Acosta gives up 4 unearned runs (a Tejada throwing error) before Miguel Batista comes on and gives up another run.

4. Mets Lose to Miami, 8-4
Mets lead 2-0 heading into the bottom of the 7th. Ramon Ramirez gives up a two-run jack to John Buck.

Mets score 2 in the top of the 9th. However, Frank Francisco cannot get an out and ends up allowing 3 earned runs. Manny Acosta comes on and gives up 3 of his own runs on a Mike Stanton grand slam.

5. Mets Lose to SF 4-3 in extra innings

Mets tie the game in the bottom 9th. Frank Francisco in the top 10th gives up the go ahead run.

6. Mets Lose to Miami, 6-5
Mets fight back to take the lead in the top 8th, 5-3. Bobby Parnell is attributed with an unearned run in the bottom 8th on an Ike Davis throwing error.

Frank Francisco with a save opportunity gives up 3 hits and 2 earned runs in the 9th for the loss.

That's the other thing about team blown saves, you can have multiple blown saves in one game.

Sounds like Ike Daivs could actually be sent to the minors unless he shows some life with the bat by the time Bay is activated (about 2 weeks).

Wouldn't be surprised if he's called up sometime in June and put in the pen.

Johan was gold today against SD. Complete game shutout, zero walks, 7 strikeouts with just 96 total pitches (74 for strikes).

And won't you know, they finally gave him some run support (winning 9-0).
