Chipper Jones to Retire After 2012 Season

    :jay:

Chipper Jones will retire at the end of the 2012 season, the Atlanta Braves said Thursday.

The Braves and Jones, who will be 40 next month, said they have expressed interest in the third baseman remaining with the franchise in a yet-to-be-determined capacity after he retires.

Jones, who was drafted No. 1 overall by the Braves in the 1990 amateur draft, has spent his entire professional career with the franchise, including 18 major league seasons. He has a .304 career average with 454 home runs, 526 doubles and 1,561 RBIs in 2,387 games.

He was the National League's Most Valuable Player in 1999 and has been an All-Star seven times. He won the 2008 NL batting title with a .364 average and is the only switch hitter in major league history with more than 300 home runs and a batting average over .300.

Jones hit. 275 with 18 home runs and 70 RBIs in 126 games last season.

Yeah, just throwing it out there for discussion. Maybe someone is on drugs and thinks otherwise.

My favorite player since I started playing tee ball. Great Guy for the community (from my hometown) and a stand up Guy all together.

For the sake of discussion, I'll say not on his first go around

Compare him to third basemen of the last 30-40 years. Chipper doesn't have 3000 hits (most likely not going to happen) and he doesn't have 500 homers. Those are the "standards" for automatic acceptance in to the HoF (for now, anyways. PEDs may change that).

Of the third basemen currently in the HoF that played in the last 30-40 years, only Brooks Robinson doesn't meet those standards. But he is also considered the best defensive third baseman ever ( "The Human Vacuum Cleaner").
The king was shaken. He went up to the room over the gateway and wept.
As he went, he said: "O my son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom!
If only I had died instead of you
O Absalom, my son, my son!"

Chipper Jones is the second best switch hitter in MLB history.

He was a premier player for well over a decade.

He's got an MVP, a WS ring, a batting title. Etc.

There is no sane reason he shouldn't be in on the 1st ballot.

Gonna be strange to see him not on a baseball diamond in 2013. One of my childhood favorites.

Easily 1st ballot. Not even a discussion.

This. He has been in playing in a Braves uniform ever since I watched baseball. Will be weird to see him gone

I loved chanting that, but I also was a huge Chipper fan, though I kept that inside at Shea. Would love for there to be a nice crowd chanting at him during the Braves last visit to NY this season.

Also, easy hall of famer. What a joke of a post made by a joke of a poster.
