VSN Power Rankings - Version 7

NOTE: The standings are based off the result of Sunday's games. Last week rankings in ( )
Woy, Rudi and Lanteri submitted rankings listing this weeks, with Mr. Tremblay and Goobyslayer taking care of the blurbs. Thanks to all those involved

Last Week's: VSN Power Rankings - Version 6

Biggest Jump: Los Angeles Angels +7
Biggest Fall: Toronto Blue Jays -8

    1. Los Angeles Dodgers - 32-15 (1)
Woy: This team just continues to roll without Matt Kemp and will get last year's true MVP relatively soon.
Gooby: Matt Kemp's productions slowed down, even before he hit the DL. However Kemp's absence and other injuries certainly haven't slowed down the Dodgers. Their return to dominance this spring, and Jerry Hairston Jr's 5/5 day today, show that you just can’t predict baseball.

    2. Texas Rangers – 30-18 (2)
Woy: Josh Hamilton is five homeruns shy of tying his mark of 25 last season...and that was in 121 games.
Gooby:Led by MVP, Josh Hamilton's twenty homeruns, the Rangers offense has been torrid so far this year. With 264 runs scored, they've outscored the Pirates two to one, and no one else in baseball is close to matching that production. They're getting solid contributions from everyone in the lineup, and seem to be on their way to their third straight playoff appearance.

    3. Tampa Bay Rays – 29-19 (6)
Woy: Joe Maddon is easily my favorite manager in the game.
Gooby: The Rays roster has managed to produce a paltry 11.8 WAR this season, good for middle of the pack in MLB. However the Rays are the rightful leaders in the AL East so far this year. How long will this team continue to beat adversity, only to be ignored by their city? A move out of Florida would do wonders.

    4. Baltimore Orioles – 29-19 (3)
Woy: Good for the Orioles for locking up Adam Jones. Although the price is a bit high, I always like seeing these budding stars staying with their current team and wanting to build with them.
Gooby: No one has over performed more then the Orioles in 2012. A glance at the statistics explains why. The team is outperforming their FIP by a half a run, by far the largest margin in baseball. I expect things to even out soon, especially with Zach Britton returning to the rotation.

    5. Washington Nationals – 29-18 (5)
Woy: Bryce Harper is starting to find his groove and raised his batting average from .244 to .278 over the past week.
Gooby: Bryce Harper's debut is getting the headlines in the nations capital, however the pitching is the real story. The National's pitching staff can boast the lowest ERA and FIP in MLB. Gio's walks will catch up to him and Strasburg will be done in August, but their start remains impressive.

    6. Cincinnati Reds – 27-20 (10)
Woy: The Reds are rolling at the moment, winning eight of their last nine games. As they travel to Pittsburgh and Houston this week, they want to extend their NL Central lead while the Cardinals still deal with the injury bug.
Gooby: With Joey Votto finding his homerun swing, the Reds have jumped into first place in the NL Central. Since Votto's three homer outburst two weeks ago, the Reds are 11-4.

    7. St. Louis Cardinals – 26-22 (8)
Woy: Injuries and an ineffective bullpen have been killing the reigning champs right now. Adam Wainwright finally has started to look like his old self over his last two starts.
Gooby: David Freese's production has certainly dropped, and Lance Berkman is out for the year. However these blows could be offset by the emergence of Allen Craig. However the second baseman still has to find a way to stay healthy. The young star has been a frequent visitor the DL himself the last two years.

    8. Atlanta Braves – 26-23 (4)
Woy: Seven straight losses have knocked the Braves to fourth in the NL East. They have another tough week ahead of them with St. Louis and the Nationals again.
Gooby: The Braves have been good so far this season. But can there young pitching be good enough, for Chipper Jones to go out with a playoff bang? Michael Bourn and Brian McCann could be following Jones out of the organization too.

    9. New York Yankees – 26-21 (12)
Woy: Because of Baltimore's surprising start, the Yankees have been kind of an after-thought in the AL East but have kept within striking distance.
Gooby: Derek Jeter continues to write his way into the record books, passing all time greats as he does it. George Brett's 3,154 hits is the most recent hurdle.

    10.Cleveland Indians– 26-21 (11)
Woy: I honestly haven't watched a minute of this team. Did Johnny Damon get signed by them yet?
Gooby: The only thing that sucks more then the Indians, is Chris Perez's recent spat with the media. Get back to sucking so we can make fun of you again Chris.

    11. Miami Marlins – 26-22 (7)
Woy: Giancarlo Stanton has just hit another 500 foot homerun.
Gooby: Miami expected more from Jose Reyes then a .262 batting average when they made the first big splash of the offseason by signing the SS. Reyes has been a bigger bust then a stadium that looks like it's straight out of Joel Schumacher's imagination in the Miami ghetto.

    12. New York Mets – 27-21 (14)
Woy: The Mets could actually be leading the NL East if they had a half-decent bullpen. I, along with most of baseball fans, believe they end up in the division cellar by season's end but this start has given them some hope for the future.
Gooby: Thanks to a ridiculously high BABIP, David Wright has accounted for 62% of the Met's offensive players' WAR. Racine native Vinny Rottino was in my newspaper this week, after hitting his first career homerun.

    13. Chicago White Sox – 26-22 (15)
Woy: Paul Konerko is flirting with .400, Adam Dunn is back to crushing the ball and the White Sox are looking like legitimate playoff contenders under first-year manager Robin Ventura.
Gooby: The divorce from Ozzie and small ball seems to be working for Adam Dunn and Paul Konerko. However their newly signed ace, continues to regress.

    14. Philadelphia Phillies – 25-24 (17)
Woy: Kyle Kendrick shuts out the best offense in the NL, then Roy Halladay gives up four quick ones to them. #youcan'tpredictbaseball
Gooby: With their stars on the disabled list, the worst fans in sports are getting exactly what they deserve. After Cole Hamels leaves for greener pastures in the offseason, and the rest of the division on the rise, the Phillies run looks to be over.

    15. San Francisco Giants – 25-23 (13)
Woy: Trying to prove last year was a fluke, Melky Cabrera has succeeded so far with a .356/.401/.531 line.
Gooby: The "players with more home runs then Albert Pujols meme is dead. But maybe we could replace it with, "players with an ERA lower then Tim Lincecum. The not so hard throwing flamethrower has a 6.41 ERA.

    16. Los Angeles Angels - 24-25 (23)
Woy: Don't look now, but the Angels have won six straight and are creeping on .500 behind Albert Pujols's recent hot streak. Games against the Yankees and Rangers this coming week are critical in getting back into the AL West picture.
Gooby: No rookie has been better then Mike Trout, just give him the rookie of the year already. I can only wonder what he will accomplish in his career.

    17a. Detroit Tigers – 23-24 (19)
Woy: Miguel Cabrera's 9th inning homer saved the Tigers from dropping a game to the AL's worst team. They needed a sleep after being swept by Cleveland earlier in the week.
Gooby: Third lowest in the country. No that's not Detroit's employment rate, it's their offensive players' WAR ranking. Prince Fielder and the boy's have accounted for 3.3 WAR this season, things simply haven't gone as planned, but don't worry the rest of the division sucks.

    17b. Toronto Blue Jays – 24-24 (9)
Woy: Colby Rasmus continues to make last year's deadline deal look good for the Cardinals.
Gooby: Things haven't gone Toronto's way so far this season, they've had the third toughest schedule in MLB. However hope remains, they've only played six games against the AL Central.

    19. Boston Red Sox – 23-24 (16)
Woy: Who would have thought Felix Doubront would have the rotation's lowest ERA?
Gooby: Bobby Valentine, and pitching coach Bob McClure, appear to have weathered the storm. Boston is winning again, and the pitching has improved. Unfortunately Ben Cherington will probably continue to run the team ass backwards and make another terrible trade for bullpen help this July. But I guess this is to be expected, this dumb ass actually thought it was a good idea to put a ring on Wendy Nix's finger.

    20. Pittsburgh Pirates - 23-24 (22)
Woy: I'm starting to hate all the "raise the jolly roger" tweets/posts on social media sites. Newsflash Pirates fans, you just played the Cubs.
Gooby: Good lord this team sucks. Andrew McCutchen has accounted for 2.1 wins, the rest of the offense? -1.3. Cya next year!

    21. Houston Astros – 22-25 (24)
Woy: I agree with Warner - Houston finishes ahead of Milwaukee. Third place is a tremendous success after being predicted as the league's worst team in Spring Training.
Gooby: They certainly are scrappy, but seeing Jordan Schafer navigate Tal's hill certainly isn't the same as Michael Bourne.

    22. Arizona Diamondbacks – 22-26 (20)
Woy: Greatest blog recap I've ever read: http://www.azsnakepit.com/2012/5/23/...k-bullpen-derp
Gooby: Ian Kennedy is pitching more like the guy the Yankees believed could never make it in the AL East. I can't say anyone is surprised.

    23. Oakland Athletics – 22-26 (18)
Woy: Josh Reddick has 13 homeruns. That's not a typo.
Gooby: This team is batting .210. .210! That's almost as bad as the batting average Craig Counsell put up last year, and he went two months of playing time without collecting a hit!

    24. Seattle Mariners - 21-29 (21)
Woy: "The Mariners are a hardnose, rough and tough, team founded on great values that our for fathers have passed down to them." - Potatoes002
Gooby: Maybe the Mariners could try playing lacrosse, since the baseball thing certainly isn't working out for them.

    25. Kansas City Royals – 19-27 (26)
Woy: Bruce Chen is still the best pitcher in the Royal rotation with a 4.81 ERA. Wow.
Gooby: With Eric Hosmer and Alex Gordon struggling, the popular breakout team candidate appears to be a let down once again. Wait until the pitching develops people!

    26. Milwaukee Brewers – 19-28 (25)
Woy: This team is horrific and I love it.
Gooby: Ryan Braun is actually on pace to have an even better year then his 2011 MVP campaign. Boasting the highest slugging percentage in the National league, he appears to be a popular name on award ballots again this year.

    27. Colorado Rockies – 17-29 (28)
Woy: The only time I want to watch the Rockies is when Jamie Moyer pitches. Hopefully he can string together some decent starts and not lose his rotation spot.
Gooby: Jamie Moyer is the oldest starter to ever win a MLB game. In twenty years, this could become the worst Disney movie ever, and it isn't just because Moyer sucks. The Rockies are twelve games under .500 in May.

    28. San Diego Padres – 17-32 (27)
Woy: Must-see TV: Padres @ Cubs, starting a three-game set on Monday.
Gooby: Petco Park still makes the team's offense look terrible, but at least it makes Edinson Volquez appear to be a valuable trade piece. The right hander has cut his HR/9 in half this season, and is boasting the best BABIP and LOB% of his career.

    29. Minnesota Twins – 15-32 (30)
Woy: Former Cardinals farmhand P.J. Walters is a bright spot since being called up from Minnesota's AAA affiliate.
Gooby:For a spacious ballpark, this team's pitching sure is bad. They've gotten the least amount of strikeouts of anyone in MLB, all while giving up the most home runs, and runs.

    30. Chicago Cubs – 15-32 (29)
Woy: A few weeks ago, some Cubs fans were insisting the team would keep pace with their bitter rival St. Louis. As the month ends, it seems like that rings true as Chicago is two games ahead of the 1903 Cardinals (13-34 after 47 games, 43-94 overall).
Gooby: With the expanded playoffs, and no compensation for mid season acquisitions who leave in the offseason, less teams are expected to be sellers in July. However everyone knew the Cubs would be sellers in February. The complete rebuild has a long way to go.

You mean that week where he was fighting a sore hamstring and tried to play through the pain?

Two out of three from the Yankees and a win over the Rangers last night. Lets keep rolling Halos

Phillies - For those of you that saw Rounders. Teddy KGB "hanging around hanging around, kids got alligator blood". They are doing enough to keep in interesting. Utley will play soon. Howard not till July now, Cliff Lee goes on the DL/doesnt have a win yet, you lose Halliday now and are only 3.5 back. The NL east is choking on Pats CheeseSteak. Dont be surprised if Phiily tries and move Halliday in order to free up money and resign Cole. The mileage may be starting show on a great pitcher.
