Magglio Ordonez To Announce Retirement Sunday

Former Detroit Tigers outfielder Magglio Ordoņez will announce his retirement in a pregame ceremony Sunday at Comerica Park.

Ordoņez played the final seven seasons of his 15-year major league career with the Tigers and will forever be remembered for his walk-off, three-run home run in Game 4 of the American League Championship Series on Oct. 14, 2006, at Comerica Park. The blast put the Tigers in the World Series for the first time in 22 years.

Ordoņez batted .312 with 186 doubles, 107 home runs and 533 RBI in 847 games with the Tigers. He was named to the American League All-Star squad in both 2006 and 2007, won an American League Silver Slugger Award in 2007 and batted .363 in 2007 to win the American League batting title, becoming the first Tigers player to win the batting title since Norm Cash in 1961.

In addition to his two All-Star selections with the Tigers, he was named to the team four times with the Chicago White Sox (1999-2001, 2003) and also won two American League Silver Slugger Awards with the White Sox (2000, 2002).

Radio announcer Dan Dickerson will emcee the ceremony, which will begin on the field at approximately 12:40 p.m. Ordoņez and his family will take part in the ceremony. Fans are encouraged to come out to Comerica Park early.

      NO!!!

Just a pre-emptive strike on the inevitable is he an HOFer question. Excellent during his heyday, though.

I agree with this. Great player, but there is nothing that screams HOF about him.

        BA- .309
        Hits- 2,156
        Home runs- 294

More goes into it than just those three stats, but he doesn't have the numbers that the voters like.

Weird player. Seemed to be gimpy when he was on Detroit, yet he was almost as good for the Tigers as for the White Sox pre-injury.

Nah, just didn't do it long enough. His peak was good but it wasn't really elite, it was just really, really good.

If he hits .400 maybe, but he'd be one of the worst Hall of Famers ever. And it would probably still require at least 3-4 more years like this (well into his early 40s).

                  Hall of Good.

He was a hell of a player, didn't even realize his stats were that high for the past couple of years, to be honest I just thought he fell off the face of the earth.

Magglio falls into the Vada Pinson/Tony Oliva category. You look at the numbers, and come away surprised at how good he was, but the resume still comes up a bit short.

He actually had a very similar career to Oliva, but with less black ink. No Oliva, no Magglio.

As for Konerko, he's going to hit 500 HR's. He's still an excellent offensive player, and will probably hang around for two years after he's washed up and bash a few more (like Thome & Giambi). He'll be an interesting case.

You know what? Screw that whole Oliva/Magglio/Pinson crew until this guy gets in:

Konerko would be a really hard case to make, really hard.

Never was the best at his position, rarely if ever the top 5 player in his league, consistent but not ever great. A very, very good player but not a Hall of Famer.

                          Dick Allen should be in.

Shame on you all for taking the bait and diving into a discussion on Paul Konerko's chances at the HOF. Guess I'll follow suit. There is 0% chance he is an HOFer. If he hit .400 for the next 3 years I'll reconsider.
