Jamie Moyer just designated for assignment.
The Rockies' feel-good story ended prematurely as they designated left-handed pitcher Jamie Moyer for assignment on Wednesday.
"It's a tough pill to swallow, but it's part of the business," Moyer said. "It's all about putting up results."
The 49-year-old made history on April 17 vs. the Padres, becoming the oldest major-league pitcher to win a game.
But he was hit hard in his past two starts, leaving the club to go in a different direction.
"I just felt like that by sending him out there, we were compromising him and the team," Rockies manager Jim Tracy said. "It's difficult, because he's as professional as any player I've ever been around.
"But we felt like this is something we had to do."
The Rockies will recall reliever Carlos Torres from Colorado Springs, but they have not determined who will start Friday against the Dodgers in Denver, in the spot where Moyer was scheduled to start.
Tracy said the pitcher is technically already on the roster, meaning the start could go to Torres once he arrives.
By designating Moyer for assignment, the Rockies have 10 days to either trade or release him. He's still owed roughly $500,000 on his salary this season.
Moyer this season is 2-5 with a 5.70 ERA in 10 games started. He has a career record of 269-209 with a 4.25 ERA.
Moyer said he is open to continuing his career in the major leagues, depending on what interest he draws. His immediate plans, he said, is to return to California for the graduation of one of his sons and to watch him play high school baseball.
