Ben Sheets signs deal with Atlanta

I laugh how you guys blew your load when Jamie Moyer started for the Colorado "worst pitching staff in baseball" Rockies this year after coming back from arm surgery, but when Ben Sheets, a far better player, starts a comeback it's nothing but failure remarks. Sheets isn't the last option on the table for the Rockies, he has contenders calling his name.[REDACTED]Comment

Point remains...too many surgeries, and his offspeed stuff won't work without his fastball being in the lower-middle 90s like it used to be.
And yes, he does throw a circle change. In fact, it's his most effective pitch in terms of "thrown for strikes %" which sits at nearly 73, according to pitch f/x.
Groaned for thinking groaning is punishment; as well as believing that the extra "umph" he puts into velocity for scouts at a workout to prove he still has it is how hard he'll actually throw in a game....
Plenty of pitchers do just fine with a high 80's/low 90's fastball. The key is being able to command the pitch and not make mistakes. Once again this seems to work in Sheets' favor, as he has always had excellent command (2.07 BB/9). With his great curveball he can still work up in the zone with that type of fastball velocity.
LOL at your goofy pitch f/x stat. You do know there is a difference between a circle change and a normal changeup right? His change is nothing more then a show me pitch, nothing more. Look at the data for yourself: http://brooksbaseball.net/player_car...?player=282656Comment

So you're suggesting that a contender is going to give Ben Sheets a lot of money, even though he "sucks" now. And then bring him up to the Majors where he will "break the scale" as far as how bad he sucks. Cool fucking story dude, why don't you tell me some more about the latest Bubblegum bubble that Adam Jones blew, as that appears to be the extent of your baseball knowledge.Comment

2010. I'm sure his curveball is still nasty. Ben will be a difference maker this fall for a lucky team. Also nice troll attempt. Bringing up Greinke is about as relevant to this conversation as "Zan's" made up circle change pitch. It's silly and quite frankly stupid to write off Milwaukee as a long term home for Greinke. The shoe fits every way you look at the situation.
How can you be sure his curveball will be nasty? The guy hasn't pitched in the bigs in over two years, and had three elbow surgeries during that time. For all we know, that curve could have caused all of the damage to his elbow.
Bottom line, we can't be sure if Sheets is back at all. We have just as much evidence that a Mark Prior MLB comeback will be as successful as a Ben Sheets MLB comeback.Comment

I believe I was cautiously optimistic of a Moyer comeback, but regardless, it is a good story for a guy who has pitched in MLB for longer than some posters here have been alive. Sheets doesn't carry that for as many people, and as a Brewers fan, I can certainly understand it.

When healthy Ben Sheets has always been an outstading MLB pitcher. It's a far better topic then Jamie Moyer who hasn't been good enough to pitch for a contender since ever. As for the Mark Prior comparison, that guy hasn't been relevant since 2005. How can you compare Ben, who has been out of baseball for a normal amount of time considering the surgery, to a guy who has been "rehabbing" for seven years?Comment

Well without his curveball Ben Sheets isn't a major league baseball player. Plain and simple. Since he has contenders interested, I'm going to assume that he can still throw the pitch. Is that optimistic? I don't give two fucks. Pardon me for romanticizing the guy, who was the beginning and end of Brewer baseball for several years.

This is silly. It's like saying George HW Bush is just as likely to run for president in the future as Jeb Bush is.Comment

This is baseball man, not politics. In any sport, it is hard to come back from injury after just one year, forget 2.5, 7 or whatever. Which is why I said there is just as much reason to believe Prior will come back as to believe Sheets will come back. You just don't know. And I like Sheets, as he had a great stretch and it is always a shame to see a potential great player sidelined with injury. I just don't see a comeback likely, and if he does, I don't think he will have much of an impact. Doesn't mean I won't be rooting for him.Comment

Yeah I guess reading comprehension fail on my part for not realizing how shitty your post was in the first place and not ignoring it.

I know nothing about baseball, don't know what a bat is really dude, why don't you teach me your vast knowledge of baseball.

Prior has been attempting to comeback for seven years, and he has failed every single year.
This is Ben Sheets first attempt at coming back to baseball, he has contenders interested. He hasn't been out of baseball for an unreasonable amount of time, considering the surgery. When he had surgery, the expectation was he would miss 2011 and pitch again in 2012. Right on track, maybe a little late, but signing midseason is becoming trendy among veteran starters with past injuries. Sheets' situation has a much better outlook then Prior's.Comment
