    Best Offseason Trade so far

Warner was talking about it last night and I've heard him say something about it in the past that the Jeremy Guthrie to Colorado for Jason Hammel and Matt Lidstrom was the best trade of the offseason.

Someone else said the Gio Gonzalez trade was the best.

After the way Hammel has pitched this first half of the season is probably the best any player has pitched for the Orioles since Moose.

    Hammel
GP GS CG SHO IP H R ER HR BB SO W L P/GS WHIP BAA ERA
    13 13 1 1 81.2 66 28 26 7 29 77 7 2 103.5 1.16 .219 2.87
    Gonzalez

GP GS CG SHO IP H R ER HR BB SO W L P/GS WHIP BAA ERA
    13 13 0 0 78.2 48 22 22 1 32 97 8 3 98.7 1.02 .173 2.52
Finally the Orioles only gave up Jeremy Guthrie who sucks as a Rockie now. The Nats gave up P Brad Peacock, C Derik Norris, P Tommy Malone and P AJ Cole.

IF you have another throw it in here.

Latos has been fine since April, hasn't lost a decision since April 18. 5-2 and by the end of the year those rate stats will be right where they belong after a bad start.

The Hammel trade wins easily. Guthrie stinks, and the O's got a useful RP to boot.

Hammel trade. They got great pitching for trash. The Nats trade is good, but will have to re-evaluated when AJ Cole and Derek Norris make it to the show.
The king was shaken. He went up to the room over the gateway and wept.
As he went, he said: "O my son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom!
If only I had died instead of you
O Absalom, my son, my son!"

I was the one that suggested the Gio trade, but looking at the numbers - there's no way. The Hammel trade is fantastic and he's doing it against 8 position players and a DH in the AL East instead of the 8 position players and a pitcher in the NL Anywhere. I'm an NL (and West Coast) guy so outside of NL West headlines and general info about other teams the Dodgers are playing, I don't really see much about non-Yankee/Ray/RedSox players in my day-to-day baseball readings.

So yeah, W2B was right - Hammel trade was much better for the Orioles than the Gio trade was for the Nats.

Another thing to look at for the Hammel and Gonzalez trades is that the Nats gave up four prospects to make the deal. You have no idea if that will turn out to be the deal that the Twins gave up for Johan Santana which netted them little in return, or the Glenn Davis deal the Orioles made where they gave up Schilling, Harnisch and Steve Finley.

For the Orioles to get Hammel and a good reliever in Lindstrom for just Guthrie, a 32 year old starter in his final contract season, is just a much better deal in my mind.

For the long term I'd like to say Gio but I'm a homer.

What Hammel is doing in Baltimore is incredible

Can't believe nobody has said Jed Lowrie for Mark Melancon yet.

In a point in time where there are maybe 5 competent everyday shortstops to be found, Houston acquired a good one for a total shitbum reliever.

                        That's a good one.

I think people just forget about Lowrie because he's playing in MLB purgatory right now and just gets lumped in with the rest of that terrible lineup.

Like Glen said, Lowrie is easily forgotten about because of where he plays. I admit, he is doing something great in Houston and in some small part is the reason why they're not terri-bad.

Another good one.....could be a combination of playing with the Astros and coming off the Red Sox,where some might ignore him based off the fact that the Sox traded him.
