    Royals' Jonathan Sanchez DFA

    Print

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Kansas City Royals have designated struggling starter Jonathan Sanchez for assignment.

The Royals announced the move before Tuesday night's game against the Seattle Mariners.

Sanchez was 1-6 with a 7.76 ERA in 12 starts. The left-hander, who threw a no-hitter for San Francisco in July 2009, gave up seven runs in 1 1/3 innings in Monday night's loss to the Mariners.

The Royals acquired Sanchez and minor leaguer Ryan Verdugo last November from the Giants for outfielder Melky Cabrera, who is hitting .353 and was named MVP of last week's All-Star Game in Kansas City.

The Royals recalled Verdugo, who was slated to start Tuesday night, and right-hander Vin Mazzaro from Triple-A Omaha.

Outfielder Jason Bourgeois, who had a .333 average in 19 games, was optioned to Omaha.

Someone needs to get a Melky Cabrera smiley, as this deal was terrible from the Royals perspective.

Awful trade in hindsight, but I remember when it happened how everyone was noting how cheaply the Royals were able to land a lefty with "electric stuff" and all that.

We also had no idea that Cabrera would have another season like this. How many times do a Bautista or Cabrera happen? It's hard to predict, and the same people also criticized the Orioles for the return they got for Jeremy Guthrie.

The king was shaken. He went up to the room over the gateway and wept.
As he went, he said: "O my son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom!
If only I had died instead of you
O Absalom, my son, my son!"

i always liked Melky even with the Yanks...he just needed to get in shape...he almost blew his career when he got really fat with the braves but he's turned it around a LOT...
