Hall of Fame Inner Circle article

    Mays was the #1 vote-getter.

Anywho, I was surprised at the order of the "Top 50" Inner Circle. Mantle was a great player, but him getting more votes than Ty Cobb or Ted Williams is kind of ridiculous. My point is if you are upset that Willie Mays isn't differentiated from Willie Stargell in the HOF, then you are probably going to create another set of problems by trying to elevate one above the other.

    Other surprises...
    Joe DiMaggio above Walter Johnson
Frank Robinson as the #17 vote getter
George Brett at #24 and Cal Ripken at #28
Bob Feller being on the list at all, and at #31
Lefty Grove, probably the greatest pitcher ever, is stuck at #33

I'm getting deeper into the list, and there are just too many arguments.

I thought Clemente was better than Mays

Lots of places to argue on this list (Tom Seaver tied with Matthewson and AHEAD of Gibson, Spahn, Koufax, Grove, Carlton and Ryan?). Funny thing to me is no one was unanimous. Who could submit an honest ballot for the top 50 baseball players of all time and not include Willie Mays, Babe Ruth, or any of those top 5 guys?

Glad to see Rickey Henderson in top 20 though.

Yeah, you can't complain that the HOF does a half-ass job when deciding who to allow in, and then make your own half-ass "inner circle" list. So now instead of one half-ass list, we have two. I don't see what that solves.

If I were forced to create my own "inner circle", it would have 25 players max. I think once you get down to splitting hairs with Robin Roberts and Tony Gwynn, you've gone too far.

The Tom Seaver ranking is interesting. I'll have to actually delve into it tomorrow, but off the top of my head I think he could be ahead of Gibson, Koufax, and Ryan. I wouldn't put him above Spahn or Grove. Carlton is questionable.

That's pretty much what I mean. Seaver could be ahead of some of those guys, but having him ahead of all of them doesn't sound right when I read it. Definitely deserves delving into.
