Shields and Zobrist possibly being dealt to....

    The Angels???

Per Jim Bowden rumors are starting to circulate:

Only conversation at this point, but, the Rays pulled off a similar trade back in 2009 with the Angels. They dealt Scott Kazmir for Alex Torres, Matt Sweeney and a PTBNL. The PTBNL ended up being Sean Rodriguez. If this deal ended up coming to fruition, the Rays would receive two of the Angels top ten prospects in Hellweg and Richards, plus receive Kendrick (who can play multiple positions and is under contract for 3+ seasons) and a potential additional player.

I like the deal a lot.

We have Kendrick's replacement in the minors now in Segura and Zobrist will make a great utility guy and can hopefully spend some time at 3B for us too.

Hellweg has never really impressed me. He looks the part and throws hard but his command just wasn't there when I watched him play last season. Maybe he's improved it this season, but I still like the trade regardless.

I actually like the trade for the Rays myself. So, if you and I made the decision, it would be a win-win lol.

I hate to see Zobrist go. He's cheap, he can play all positions in the field (other than catcher and pitcher), but, he has become a very good OFer. Plus, he is waaaay underrated amongst the casual fan. Not a big name, but, this guy is a 4+ WAR player year in and out. He is worth much more than he is paid. I have made my peace with Shields leaving. It is just a part of the business and it is pretty clear the Rays will not pick those up. I think the Rays get a fair return for what they are giving up here...IF THIS DEAL HAPPENS.

This trade absolutely fucking blows on the Rays end. I believe Maddon already shot down this rumor as well by laughing at it when asked if it had any merit.

No reason at all to move Zobrist for Kendrick. Zobrist can play basically anywhere, makes less money, and is the better overall hitter.

Shields should of been traded last offseason to Cincy for Grandal and Alonso.

I don't think it is as bad as you do. Zobrist does come cheap and that is why I stated that I would hate to see him go, but, while Kendrick would come at a higher rate, he still provides that flexibility in the field and he may be a add-on for snatching two top pitching prospects from the Angels.

Now, if Maddon has already said it was baseless, then all of this is really pointless lol.

This team knows how to scout and develop pitchers so if they are looking at those two and see a good future I believe them. At the same time they need to address the fact that they don't have anyone resembling a good catcher for the long term. That and the fact they have the worst lineup in the AL east, and are right there at the bottom of the AL all together. I'd like to see them go after bats than anything because what we have to watch now is absolute shit. Jose Molina while good at catching is going to swing at the first pitch every time. Carlos Pena is going to get his walks and hit a few homers but continues to strike out in key situations when we need a ball in play. Hideki Matsui being on this team is such an absolute mind fuck to me, and he's had over 100 PA's now and still looks as shitty as he did when he came up.

I don't mind them moving Shields, but moving Zobrist who's been their best hitter all year and one of the most valuable guys to the team the last 4 years doesn't make any sense to me personally.

What do you expect from Bowden? For Shields alone that package should be better. But considering he is slightly above most of his career numbers this year, and had such a great season last year, they probably should have moved him in the off-season. He's also signed through 2014.
