    Nick Swisher Seeking "Werth-type" Deal

Word going around is, Nick Swisher, the Yankees' eternally upbeat rightfield power supply, may seek a "Jayson Werth contract" when he hits free agency at the end of the year.

To baseball fans, that is well-known to mean $126 million over seven years. In other words, it's a lot more money than most folks have guessed so far for Swish.

Second-hand or not, some Yankees people have heard that's the figure Swisher is thinking about and may at least shoot for, and one other source who's spoken to Swisher said that, indeed, Swisher has shown real interest in Werth's deal. It's believed the two sides have had no extension talks yet, as it is team policy to wait for free agency, except in rare cases.

While the $126-million figure is two to three times more than most of the estimates for Swisher, free agency brings some surprises. The Werth deal, for instance.

Swisher initially gave the usual player-speak answer, "I haven't thought about it,'' when asked if he sees the Werth deal as a fair comp for him. I tried to lighten the mood by asking if he had ever "heard'' of the Werth contract, and Swisher characteristically responded by laughing uproariously. We both know, of course, that any corner outfielder who's a very good player having a very good year (but is a bit short of being a cornerstone player) has to have thought long and hard about the Werth deal.

Eventually, he did say about Werth's Nationals contract, "It's a great deal for him.'' And then Swisher did challenge me to look at the record.

"Check it out,'' Swisher implored me. "See what it says.''

Really doubt Swisher is a Yankee next year. Love him as a player, he will be missed.

A soon-to-be 32 year old outfielder who has hit 30+ HR just once (six years ago), has never had a 100 RBI year, averaged a .255 batting average, whose WAR has only been above 3 three times in his career (and not since 2010)….who hasn't hit well in the playoffs at all wants a $100+ million contract?

I'm not a psycho baseball fan like most guys in this forum ... I knew nothing about Nick Swisher, other than his girlfriend (Joanna Garcia ... a real cutie) and the fact that he played for the Yankees.
Anyway, went to a Yankees game vs. Texas Thursday. Was really impressed with Swisher's enthusiasm and fan friendly behaviour/behavior ... then read on SI than most of MLB players think he's a phony.

Have no clue. He seemed genuine to me.

All that said, Jayson Werth ain't worth $126M over 7 years and neither is Swisher.

I was reading that "AnonymousPRGuy" interview on Deadspin and the guy said something about how Yankee players hate Swisher. If that guy is right then I doubt he'll be back in pinstripes, and if they won't pay him Werth money then the rest of the league shouldn't either.

But I'm lying. I'm sure some fucking team will pay him even more than what Werth's making.

Said similar things about Crawford, especially being 30 and never having a 20 home run season, much less 30. I know it's a very simple way to look at things, but to sign someone to a deal that big, you need to have their best asset be their power and not speed, as that's going to go first.

As far as Swish, I wouldn't give him more than four years, $50 million, if that. A Carlos Quinten deal is more likely for an extension. He must be really hoping for the market to be weak yet again.

The Werth deal remains terrible. A better goal for Swisher would be the Ethier deal. 5 years, 85 million. But that was an overpayment, too. After Hamilton and Bourn sign, I really doubt there will be another big contract left for an OFer. Swisher, Victorino, Upton, and Cabrera will be fighting for what's left. I doubt they all get what they are expecting now.

No way he gets that type of deal.

In terms of years, I'd give him 3 years tops.

Signing him to a reasonable deal like that might actually make sense for Boston, actually. If they don't want to go nuts over Hamilton, I don't see why not.
