Melky Cabrera requests to be removed from batting title consideration

He has 501 plate appearances, and you need 502 to qualify.

Under the rules, if you are short the number of required PA's, "empty" at bats are added to your total, and if you are still the leader, you win the title. In the case of Cabrera, he would only need one AB added, and a single 0-1 added to his record would probably not cost him the title.

Cabrera has requested that this rule not be activated in his case.

This is all pretty stupid. Who cares who wins the batting title? Should baseball go back and remove HR champs and batting champs and Cy Young winners and strike out champs from the records based on failed tests?

If things happen on the field, that's it, they've happened, you can't change them. Joe Paterno won those games, Michigan didn't go 0-30 the year the Fab Five went to the finals, and if Melky wins the batting title, so be it.

Aww, that's swell of him. What a sweetheart.

MLB should already have a rule in place that if any player is suspended after getting popped for PEDs, they're instantly and automatically eliminated from any end of season awards (and if it happens in the first half of the season, All Star Game eligibility, too) later that season.

Awards, fine. I can live with that.

But the batting title isn't an award.

No one with the "he's so selfish, he's just trying to avoid the "death threats" in Twitter and save face with the public because of his PED use" statement yet

Dumb. This sets a dangerous precedent for MLB.

MLB granted his wish and he won't be eligible to win it now.

Melky Cabrera has been handling this whole thing very well. Aside from the actual rule-breaking, he's been upfront and honest the whole time and the fact that the idea to have him removed from consideration came from him is showing at least some kinda public contrition.

Whether it's coming from a PR guy is irrelevant at this point. He got busted, he owned up to it, and now he's avoiding another controversy.

Can't say the same about shithead Braun.
