    Scott Rolen expected to retire

Cincinnati Reds third baseman Scott Rolen may have played his final Major League game, according to a report in USA Today.

An official announcement isn't expected until later in the offseason.

Rolen struck out to end the Reds' season in the NL Division Series on Thursday, then was asked about his intentions for next season. He offered only that he was "going to go home and be a dad."

The 37-year-old batted .281 with 316 home runs and eight Gold Gloves during a 17-year career that began in 1996 with the Philadelphia Phillies.

End to a good career. Always enjoyed watching him, especially when he was with the Phillies and I saw him play more often.

Hard man to dislike. Great defensive player and definitely no slouch on offense.

Reds don't make the postseason in 2010 without his big first half, and that was special season for Reds fans.

How did he end up with only 8 gold gloves?

That's my feeling as well. Arguably the best defensive third baseman since Brooks Robinson- both had that explosive first step to get to the ball.

Injuries. Every year he played more than 120 games, he won the GG.

EDIT: Except for his rookie year, which he happened to win RotY.
