Dusty Back With Reds For 2 Years

The Cincinnati Reds and veteran manager Dusty Baker have agreed to terms on a two-year contract extension through the 2014 season.

Baker, who has managed the Reds to two National League Central Division titles over the last three years, will formally sign the deal during a press conference Monday afternoon.

The 63-year-old Baker owns a 419-391 record in five seasons with the Reds. Cincinnati went 97-65 this season, finishing with the second-best record in the majors. The Reds were defeated by the San Francisco Giants in the NL Division Series, squandering a 2-0 series lead and dropping the final three games at home.

"In Dusty's five seasons here, he's taken us to the postseason twice and has proven he can lead our teams to championship-caliber play on the field," Reds president and CEO Bob Castellini said in a release. "He's the right manager to continue the building process that will take us deeper and deeper into the playoffs in the future."

I'm a bit surprised at this, considering the health scare that Baker had a few weeks ago. However, a two year deal gives him enough time to hopefully get the team to a WS and then re-evaluate when he is 65.

Very happy about this. This is not the right time to change managers, and besides, Dusty has done a good job and deserves to stay.
