Red Sox Sign Jonny Gomes To A 2-Year, $10m Deal

Red Sox signed OF/DH Jonny Gomes to a two-year, $10 million contract.

It's probably more than most were expecting him to get, but there's no doubt that Gomes can be a weapon if used correctly. The 32-year-old has put up an impressive .894 OPS in his career versus left-handed pitching and belted 18 homers in 2012 for the A's. It will often be an adventure with him in left field defensively, but his bat is well suited for the Green Monster. The Sox seem likely to get a left-handed bat to pair with him.

If you stick to only playing him against lefties, and don't try to get greedy, Gomes will mash. His swing is violent.

He also turns a half dozen or so ground outs per year into hits because he runs down the line like he's on fire. Nobody plays harder.

Why would I be jealous, the team I root for dumped Crawford's contract on your team. No jealousy. I think it's a bad move when you're going to platoon a player making $20 million, or another making almost $15 million. Gomes wouldn't go to LA anyways. Any baseball guy knows that there's really no room for him. It's not Boston where there are just other platoon type players in the OF. Kemp, Crawford, Etheir....LET'S PLATOON THEM.

Oh so it's not Ben Cherington's fault that he took a strength of the team (SS) and traded that strength away for bad players who contributed negatively to the team; creating a hole at what once was a strength, while failing to fill any other hole in the roster's construction. He then tried to fix the newly created hole by signing Nick Punto. Every transaction was terrible.

The Red Sox haven't had a strong shortstop in years, the closest thing to that was Marco Scutaro who's declining range probably would have forced him out at shortstop to a position which was already filled in Boston. Now did I agree with the trade? No. But if you want to sit here and argue that the "strength of the red sox" was Marco Scutaro and Jed Lowrie, you're way off base.

I never said it was the team's only strength, I said it was one of their strengths. Only pink hat nation would be so unaware of the rest of the league and delusional enough to think Lowrie and Scutaro aren't a first division pair of SS. The lengths everyone is going through to defend Cherington is rather comical. He should have been chased out of Boston with Bobby V.

Cherington got a raw deal last year. He inherited a mess from Epstein with some of the guys and their attitudes still on the roster. Bobby V didn't work out like most predicted, and that wasn't his call- that came from his bosses. He was handicapped by a lot of things, and I think did the best with what he had last season.

I think you have to throw out last season and go from this point forward with him. Sox fans have to keep an open mind right now, which I know is difficult considering the past 1.5 seasons.
