I love Wright...my favorite Met...but fuck paying ol boy a hundo. He's 29 going on 48. He'll have a few more solid, productive seasons...but that contract is going to be real ugly sooner rather than later.

Maybe, but its only 7 years.

He can be a serviceable first baseman when he's 35 & 36.

Sometimes, you have to throw the fans a bone. Wright is set up to be a Met for life and a team icon. You live with it if he's over paid a little at the end.

The bottom line is there is really no such thing as a good long term deal for a superstar player (somebody will post an outlier). If you want to keep a superstar, you have to accept that he's going to likely make you cringe at the end.

Not everybody falls off the cliff (Paul Molitor, Rod Carew, both moved to 1B and hit until they were 40), so you gamble.

Look at it this way, people are stroking the Rays for the Longoria deal, and he will make $19.5M when he's 36. And Longoria can't stay healthy now when he's young, let alone for the next ten years when he's in his 30's.

I'm just locked and loaded in believing the Mets ain't gonna win or get to the playoffs anytime soon...so, I'm not really feeling paying for players, especially older players. Wright would be the semi-exception...but over a hundo ain't for me...that's a lot of money invested in a guy that year-to-year isn't always consistent at 29, nevermind when he's 36...it'll be a shit contract for a good portion of the deal.

This also extends to conversations about extending Dickey. I'd trade Dickey to the highest bidder yesterday.

You're also right about the superstar part for Wright, but the Mets have a long rebuild ahead of them, and are still recovering from the Bernie Madoff scandal in a sense. They have to throw the fans a bone with Wright.

Good player but doesn't really scare me anymore (or ever, really). Mets had to do it, kind of a Joe Mauer situation IMO. Could prove to be a detrimental contract down the road, but they didn't really have a choice due to fan relations.

Andy Martino says they ripped up the 2013 option and so it's a new total 8-year deal. Doesn't know how much the money is for 2013 though (the option was $16M) so it's possible the team has some extra money to spend this year or next.

Also, Terry Collins said he'll talk with Wright about becoming the team's captain.

All contract extensions are a bet, but for the Mets this is a solid one. They’ve locked up their franchise player for (basically) life, one that has demonstrated that he still has the ability to provide above average value at a difficult defensive position. This is will certainly help with the fan base and provide an anchor as they begin to cycle in new, younger players.
