Edwin Jackson "close" to agreement with the Cubs for 4 years, $52 million

The Chicago Cubs and pitcher Edwin Jackson agreed to terms on a four-year, $52 million deal, sources told ESPN's Jim Bowden on Thursday.

I like what Theo has done with the Cubs' pitching staff this winter. Some value adds.

As i've stated many times, I think Edwin Jackson is garbage, but the Cubs have in fact been crafty this offseason.

      Whoa 4 years?

I like Edwin more than most here... but I would have given him 2 years, max.

Over/under on teams Edwin will be on during this four year deal?

Ya this has sign and trade(at some point) written all over it. I bet they wish they could go back in time and not do that Garza deal.

Terrible deal for an average pitcher, but that just goes to show you the inflated cost of FA's now with much fewer quality players hitting the market. Jackson is the epitome of average, with the exception of his rubber arm, and does not deserve $13 million.

Every second or third start, he kills your bullpen for a week because he has 110 pitches through 4.

Figured some team would give Jackson a 1 or 2 year deal, but not 4...0 chance he stays all 4 years in Chicago.

Fuckin Joe Sheehan. Always baits me into an argument.

"Edwin Jackson is a better deal than Greinke"

                  Yeah, except Jackson sucks.

I think his point is that Greinke is not 50% better than Jackson. Jackson is slightly above average, IMO, and this seems like a pretty reasonable deal. In this environment of runaway inflation, this deal will be very easy to trade in 1-2 years given the price certainty.

This is where guys like Sheehan & Neyer lose me. Even if Greinke is, say, 20% better that Jackson, i'd still rather have Greinke at 50% more because Greinke is good and Jackson stinks. So its not a better deal. Besides the fact that they are now committed to Jackson for 4 years, when every team that gets their hands on him cant wait to rid themselves of him after 1.

The goal is to win games, not collect the best bargains. Greinke deal all day over four years of Jackson.

Exactly. Take away contracts, Greinke is arguably a #1 on most teams in MLB. Jackson is a #3 or #4. I won't even give the Cubs credit for a good contract- $13 million a year is still too much.

Seems like everytime Jackson is up for a deal he suckers a team to throw 50 mill at him. Or is it me...has to be his 2nd time he's gotten money like this
