    Pedro back in baseball

The Boston Red Sox have brought former Cy Young pitcher Pedro Martinez back into the organization, naming him as Special Assistant to the General Manager.

I swear this ownership is only in it for the greed just like Tito professed in his new book. I guess if you can't buy a team (see the fail the last few years) to put on the field, put the big names in the FO. Glad I stopped watching the New Boston Red Yanks back in 2008.

He was in the booth during games a couple times last season talking to Don and Jerry about the possibility of this move. It seems like this is the first step for him to eventually get into coaching in some capacity.

I think in light of the recent quotes coming out of Tito, I view this move in a very cynical way. It's not a knock on Pedro but my scorn is at Henry, Werner and Lucchino, who in my mind turned the Sox from the "lovable losers" into Yankees North. Pedro as a coach? Maybe I am not understanding that comment, VTex as a coach makes sense to me, Pedro not so much.

Every team seemingly has a "special assistant to the GM". It's a token job given to some alumni of the team, usually a fan favorite. The Reds guy is Eric Davis, for example.

It's a well paid glorified fan greeter. They wander around at spring training or the home park, shake hands, do media, sit in the broadcast booth for a half inning, and do "special assignments".

        Basically a living breathing mascot.

I don't think it was anything like being a manager or anything, like what Tek would be great at, just like being a pitching coach/instructor or something. It's just what it sounded like to me (at least from what I remember) when they were talking back and forth during the broadcasts.

I was thinking along those lines too but I don't see Pedro as a pitching coach or instructor. The guy was amazing and I think he was one of the best but I never thought of him as being all that bright. To me this looks like a PR move as opposed to an actual helpful addition to the Sox FO. Hope Pedro proves me wrong. Actually I will continue my boycott of the Red Yanks until Henry sells.

Funny, in the book, I guess Tito calls Pedro very difficult to manage.

Brady Anderson is that guy for the Orioles, but he actually goes out on a lot of those assignments to assess conditioning for the athletes. The guy is pushing 50 but still looks like he could be playing today. He does a lot during the off-season, but also does rehab visits as well.

You also forgot the former executive that either worked for the team previous or the current GM somewhere. For the Orioles, that's Lee Thomas. This is someone who usually attends the winter meetings, and might help out during the busy portions of the seasons fielding trade calls in their infancy, but essentially serves as a sounding board for some ideas.

Bringing in a big name to be a "special assistant" has nothing to do with what Francona said about ownership. Every other team has a guy they bring in for this, as people have said. They show up, greet season ticket holders, do some PR and media stuff, and basically just get back involved with the team again. I'm also glad you stopped watching the team back in 2008 you cynical bastard.

HA! Kid, guess who was sitting in the bleachers for that 1978 playoff game against the Yanks? This GUY.

I have earned the right to be as cynical as I want to be. You fucking pink hat wearing douche bags have taken over Fenway all the while the Red Sox have mimicked the Evil Empire. This isn't the team I grew up with, this isn't even the team that won in 2004 and 07. We have no right to complain about the Yankees anymore because we do the same thing as the Yankees. Buy players at any cost and hope it works out on the field. When I think back to Henry calling out the Yanks and how they operate ,I have to laugh. We are the Yankees, the Yankees North.

So sitting in the bleachers entitles you to be retarded? :milo:

Get the fuck out of here old man, because I'm younger than you makes me a pink hat? Get up off your high horse and look at what you're saying. Pedro was brought on because of a greedy front office that can't put big names on the field, so they put Pedro in the Front Office. Shit, he's not even doing anything up there but greeting fans, he has no say in anything.
