A great acquisition by Minaya (got him from LA for Jae Seo and an older AAAA pitcher) heading into the 2006 season. Turned out to be an even better set-up man for Billy Wagner than expected....overused by Willie Randolph (55 IP in 49 G), so we'll never know how he would have held up on that pace in the playoffs (ironically, if he's available, he almost DEFINITELY is pitching the 9th inning [tied] in Game 7 of the NLCS instead of Aaron Heilman who gave up the go ahead HR to Molina).

Why won't we know? Just before 2 AM on July 30 (Sunday night, the Mets were going to open with the Marlins that Tuesday), he was in a cab in Miami with his brother and a woman. The cab was hit by a drunk driver on I-95 and he fucked up his shoulder bad. He ended up having season-ending surgery days later, an injury that helped derailed his career (he hasn't pitched since 2009 when he was 29).

Back to the trade deadline 2006. So, with their awesome set-up man (the pen had the best ERA in MLB) hurt, Minaya had to do something. Originally, he tried to acquire an ace but that didn't work out. He was close to acquiring Scott Linebrink from San Diego but any chance of that ended shortly before the Monday afternoon deadline.

So, he would actually reach a deal with Pittsburgh involving OF Xavier Nady. Nady was the Mets starting RF and was having a career first half with the bat (14 HR, 40 RBI, .487 SLG) but his defense was suspect.

They acquired RP Roberto Hernandez (41 year old reliever who was with them the year before) and SP Oliver Perez to fill their desire for another starter. Hernandez was a productive reliever and did not allow a run in his 2.1 IP in the NLCS.

Perez was demoted at the end of June by Pittsburgh and they were tired of his potential not being realized in the big leagues. He returned to the majors in late-August and did not impress in 2 starts. Then, he beat ATLANTA with a CG SO. At the end of the regular season (Mets clinched the division), Pedro Martinez & El Duque both experienced injuries that forced them to miss the playoffs....so Perez was named to the playoff rotation.

He started Game 4 of the NLCS in STL, gave up 5 R in 5.2 IP but the Mets offense crushed the Cardinals pitching and won 12-5 (Perez got the W).

He started GAME 7 at Shea (against Jeff Suppan and they fucking dueled) going 6 IP allowing 1 R, 4 H, 2 BB while striking out 4.

                    Then...you know what happened.
