The St. Louis Cardinals have locked up their top starting pitcher, reaching agreement with right-hander Adam Wainwright on a five-year, $97.5 million contract extension, according to major-league sources.
The two sides had been trying to reach agreement before Opening Day. Wainwright planned to suspend negotiations after the start of the season.
Wainwright is 80-48 with a 3.15 ERA lifetime. He went 14-13 with a 3.94 ERA last season after missing all of 2011 recovering from Tommy John surgery.

His stuff and numbers were back to normal in the second half of the season, so the TJ surgery shouldn't be much of a concern anymore. This deal will keep him in a Cardinal uniform for the remainder of his career, and also allows him to serve as a mentor for the promising young arms St. Louis has in the system.
