The St. Louis Cardinals have locked up their top starting pitcher, reaching agreement with right-hander Adam Wainwright on a five-year, $97.5 million contract extension, according to major-league sources.

The two sides had been trying to reach agreement before Opening Day. Wainwright planned to suspend negotiations after the start of the season.

Wainwright is 80-48 with a 3.15 ERA lifetime. He went 14-13 with a 3.94 ERA last season after missing all of 2011 recovering from Tommy John surgery.
Good deal, and under market value too. He would have gotten upwards to 22-23 AAV in free agency.

His stuff and numbers were back to normal in the second half of the season, so the TJ surgery shouldn't be much of a concern anymore. This deal will keep him in a Cardinal uniform for the remainder of his career, and also allows him to serve as a mentor for the promising young arms St. Louis has in the system.

      Nearly 20mil a year for an #injury #prone #bum.

Deal will be worse than Bronson Arroyo's deal in 4 years.

Good for him. He'll only have known the two best organizations in the NL in his career. He is luckier than most.
