Even 2011, the Top 10 NL saves leaders, only 3 are healthy/effective today (4 if you include Storen).

i dont see the point...just because these pitchers suck now doesnt mean a save is any less of an important stat. and the volatility of RP is a time honored tradition in baseball. But that be said for starters and position players too

The point is there is so much inconsistency on a year to year basis for the vast majority of guys (the guys who can be consistent for a 3-5+ year stretch are the minority).

The 6th, 7th & 8th innings are arguably more important, but there's no popular stat for them (fuck holds).

"Don't pay for saves" - sound advice for fantasy owners and real life GMs alike. My faithfulness to this strategy will be tested in a few years when Kimbrel's arb years are up, but unless he's the 1% (Mo Rivera, essentially) it's a good idea to let him walk.

I wonder if the Nationals will follow the Brave's model of building a bullpen and sign Kimbrel if he is a FA?

ok...so how does that make the stat less valid?

what stat would you like to see for the lonesome middle reliever? a hold is a pretty important stat. just because its not glamorous in the media eyes doesnt mean its not just as crucial as the save
