go mariners 2013 (In memory of West)

Mariners didn't have an official team thread for this season, so I'll start one now.

Seattle sports isn't the same without West around, but he would want us to carry on the Mariner spirit.

    RIP West and go mariners

King Felix picks up his 100th career win tonight against the Astros, striking out 9 in allowing 0ER in 6 innings of work.

Hisashi Iwakuma takes the mound tomorrow. Interesting tidbit, Iwakuma is 10-4 with a 2.31ERA since the ASG, the best in the American League.

    2013 stats: 2-0, 1.69ERA, strikingly Asian, 18Ks, 0.53WHIP(lowest in MLB).

Here's some thoughts on the season so far...

Morse is the power hitter we've been lacking. Been slumping since coming back from the injury and doesn't get on base enough, but his power is for real and very rare to find in Seattle.

Jesus Montero is the slowest person I have every seen. Kelly Shoppach has outplayed him from behind the plate, and Montero really needs to step his game up with Zunino on a tear in AAA.

The 1-2 punch of Felix and Iwakuma is one of the best in the league without a doubt. Behind them it starts to get scary....Saunders has looked okay this year and Harang got beat up in his start but showed he has good stuff. Bullpen is bad, especially since Beavan is back in there now. Our pen stinks but I do like Oliver Perez and Carter Capps so far.

Ackley has had at least 1 hit in 7 of his last 9 games, which is promising after how bad he has started this season. He made minor adjustments to his batting stance and it has shown in this short time period.

Seager and Ryan are very fun to watch on defense.

We need to take Justin Smoak out to the pasture and shoot him in the back of the head.

        go mariners.

Don't agree with benching Ryan for Andino but Kyle Seager extended his hitting streak to 14 games tonight.

            go mariners.

              go M's!

Would like to see triunfel brought up to play some short. Montero is still so raw but he's incredibly slow and jams up the base paths. I'd give shoppach his at bats and make Jesus earn his. Otherwise, he's looking at .250 and another 16 hr season and that won't cut it for a guy who's only worth his bat. Speaking of that, you guys notice Jesus shying away from balls in the dirt and refusing to put his body in front of the ball?

Also, Saunders is back and will be leading off.

                  Some thoughts so far...

Brendan Ryan is finally starting to contribute on offense, he has at least one hit in 11 of his last 12 games.

I agree with the decision to send down Montero and Ackley. Jesus Montero is going to be switching to 1B/DH (with occasional catching duties) so hopefully that can take some of the pressure off of him. Dustin Ackley has been getting worse since he entered the league, so we need to see him start hitting in AAA.

Aaron Harang had a strong outing today. His numbers are a little deceiving and he has pitched better than what its showing. He needs to be more consistent, as he has the tendency to give up some pretty bad pitches, but he has shown flashes where he could be an okay 4th starter for us.

The catcher we called up to replace Jesus Montero is also named Jesus. New Jesus is also from Venezuela. Weird.

Jason Bay has been heating up lately, I like to see the local kid with the cool Pearl Jam walkup song to succeed.

Kendrys Morales has been on a tear this month and he has a great shot at becoming our first .300 hitter in years if he keeps this up. Starting to hit well from both sides of the plate and is really driving in the runs. I think Mariners have a legit hitter here.

                  go mariners

Dustin Ackley led off for the Tacoma Rainiers and went 5 for 6 with 4 runs and 1 HR in a 25-6 win.

Jesus Montero tears meniscus. Out 4-6 weeks.
