    MLB Draft Notes

I'll use this thread to update y'all on the upcoming June Amateur Draft. With Postseason play beginning to play. Things will begin to pick up.

Sports Illustrated release their first Mock Draft today. I tried to post the actual draft but it has too many images for this site to hold for a thread. So the link is below.

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/mlb/news/20130510/mlb-mock-draft-2013-jonathan-gray-dave-perkin/

The best player available, Georgia high school outfielder Clint Frazier, will probably not be the first pick. He's a little undersized and that fact, coupled with his being a prep position player, is historically a bad combination for players hoping to go first overall. If Frazier were a little bigger, he would be a slam dunk as the first choice.

The best pitcher available, righthander Mark Appel of Stanford, will probably not be the first selection either. He is represented by Scott Boras, meaning contract negotiations figure to be contentious, consummating in the last minute of the last hour of the July 12 signing deadline. Last year, similar contentiousness over his contract prevented Appel from signing with the Pirates, who had taken him eighth overall.

If all this sounds like the plot to a Quentin Tarantino film, don't worry. Predictability is often a bore, and unlike this year's NFL Draft, which featured a seemingly endless parade of obscure offensive tackles, the 2013 MLB Draft promises to be exciting and packed with unexpected developments.

NOTES: There are 33 picks because of various compensation rules. The Pirates failed to sign Appel after drafting him last year and are thus given a pick one slot below where he was taken in 2012.

Under a new system this year tied to compensation for lost free agents, teams would gain a first-round draft pick if a player to whom they had made a qualifying contract offer rejected that offer. The Yankees therefore received two picks at the end of the first round as compensation for losing Rafael Soriano (to the Nationals) and Nick Swisher (to the Indians) in free-agency.

Three teams -- the Nationals (for signing Soriano), the Brewers (for signing Kyle Lohse) and the Angels (for signing Josh Hamilton) do not have first round selections because they signed players who had turned down qualifying offers from their old teams. The Cardinals, Rangers and Rays gain additional picks for losing Lohse, Hamilton and B.J. Upton, respectively. The Braves lost their pick for singing Upton but added it back when Michael Bourn signed with the Indians. For a more detailed breakdown of the rules behind this new system, click here.

This draft has Mark Appel, the top pitching prospect going #2 to Chicago. I don't see them going after him and taking a HS prospect. I see Appel falling to Rockies, Indians, or Red Sox.

Appel makes sense for the cubs. Why don't you think so?

Also, why would any team draft Bobby Wahl in the first round?

        Bobby Wahl's line today vs. LSU: 2.2 IP, 6 H, 6 ER

This was against the B-team, since LSU has already clinched and it's senior day they pulled all of the starters after the first inning. He's gonna fall out of the 1st round at this rate.

i had an at bat against a kid who was a round 3 pick in mock drafts (ended up going in the 35th because he wanted to go to college) and it was the scariest thing i ever experienced.

fouled off the first pitch of the AB tho

Braves took a power throwing college reliever in round 1, same as always ...

But then ... They took THIS guy... Victor Caratini, a 19 year old switch hitting catcher from Puerto Rico ... No idea how he is behind the dish, my gut tells me he'll end up in a corner spot, but more importantly, he's got an 80 grade pimp job.

FUCK AND YES. This is the stuff you cannot coach.

Kind of pissed the Diamondbacks took my dude Justin Williams two picks before the Brewers. Crazy they drafted him as a SS though.

I liked all of the Cardinals picks. Marco Gonzales seems to be in the same high-floor mold as some of their previous first rounders (Michael Wacha and Lance Lynn), while Rob Kaminsky and his plus-plus curve ball has been called the steal of the draft by Jason Parks. Oscar Mercado didn't hit this season, but we desperately needed a shortstop to develop so I'm excited to see him progress.

In the 9th round, the Reds drafted Chad Jones formerly of LSU and formerly of the New York Giants. He's attempting his baseball comeback as a LHP. Crazy how 4 years after he last played baseball and 3 years after a gruesome car accident, he ends up being drafted higher than he was the previous two times he was drafted

In the 10th round, the Mets picked a HS shortstop out of Florida, Luis Guillorme (came to the USA as a teen from Venezuela) and he's apparently a walking web gem.
