Marlins Send Nolasco to Dodgers for 3 relief pitchers

    Marlins get:
Angel Sanchez, Steve Ames, and Josh Wall. All three are 24-26 years old and have ceilings as relievers. Sanchez is the highest rated prospect in the group (one list has him ranked as the Dodgers' #8 prospect), but he's really not much of a grab considering that he's been in the system for three years and is still pitching in Single-A. Josh Wall has thrown a few innings in the bigs, few of them have gone well. Steve Ames was getting rocked in AAA.

    Dodgers get:
Ricky Nolasco and about $200k in International spending cap money. The Dodgers will also pick up the remainder of Nolasco's salary, just over $5 million.

Nolasco will fit in the rotation as the 4th starter behind Kershaw, Grienke, and Ryu so now it's likely going to be a painful toss-up between Chris Capuano and Stephen Fife for the rest of the way. Since two of the prospects that the Dodgers sent, Ames and Wall, were on the 40-man the Dodgers now have 38 players on the active roster (obviously, Nolasco will be 39).

I like the trade, the Dodgers didn't give up much and they slightly improved the back end of the rotation. The bonus slot money to sign international players is a nice bonus as well.

It's a great trade for the Dodgers, no question.

I have to think that LA was the only team willing to pick up the entire salary, hence the relatively shitty haul Miami got in return. Pretty ridiculous that Miami couldn't turn Nolasco into at least one player that could help them at some point beyond low ceiling bullpen bodies.

So the talk of Miami wanting to simply dump his salary proved to be 100% correct.

And this is after they publicly denied it, correct?

I mean, if you really work hard and put on your Marlins-Tinted-Glasses, you might be able to fool yourself into believing that Sanchez could stay a starter and be a 4 or 5 guy in your rotation, but it's a huge stretch. He just hasn't developed and, yea he's only going to be 24 this November, but still, that's three years of blegh in a Dodgers organization that isn't very good.

I doubt Nolasco is offended. He grew up in this area and was a Dodger fan as a kid so, from what I've heard on Twitter, he's pretty stoked. He's still got a ton of family out here so they're all happy to have him in Dodger blue. About the worst thing to happen to him right now is that his income taxes are about to shoot through the roof.

Just a brutal trade for Miami from a baseball standpoint, but it's obvious they only care about cutting costs. Have fun paying for that new stadium Miami!

                You would be correct.

Colorado had a good deal on the table, but they wouldn't take on Nolasco's full salary. I do believe the Dodgers had two deals on the table, one if the Marlins would take some salary, and one where they wouldn't.

The much desired approval from KLAW. That means that even Dodgers Hater #1 Goblinslayer will have to admit that this was a good move by the Ned Colletti.

He's a local kid... I hope it works out for him, even if it is the wrong LA team.

The Marlins are just awful. One of the few trade chips they have and they gave him away.

I still expect Arizona to take the division. I expect to see them get some bullpen help and maybe another starter.

Diamondbacks are my pick, but the Giants can always get on a hot streak and get right back into things.
