I think some of you guys hold athletes to too high of a standard. They're athletes not politicians. Who cares if they lie? Just play the game, and keep your nose clean witht the law. That's all I care.

He lied to his teammates, who then took him at his word and backed him publicly. They have every right to be pissed, he put egg on all of their faces.

I get what you are saying, but in some ways these steroid situations have double standards. Its like your teammates appreciate your "talents" when you are on steroids, but when you get caught your teammates are aghast and say "How could you do this to me?". Well, what do the teammates want/expect? A guy who is mediocre but clean, or a guy who is great and on steroids?

You guys know I've always been in the "who cares, steroids don't matter as much as people think and there's way too much time devoted to finding out evidence and bread crums on guys to suspend them" but as I'm reading more about this particular case and the new tone of the Player's Union I have to say they are finally doing what they should've done a long time ago and my tone is changing a lot.

I never thought players should have done steroids, of course not, but without strong penalties I never wanted to blame the players. Yeah, slap on the wrist, public shame whatever, the crime didn't meet the punishment because dudes were destroying records and making millions while Fehr and the union allowed it to happen. Why wouldn't you do it if you would be protected by the union?

That's changed. The union is finally seeing that the cheaters deserve to be the bad guys and players in general and now very determined to get steroids, HGH and generally are siding with the 75% or so of players in the league who aren't on something. That's refreshing and the fact that some of the big guns even players I've always respected (Braun and A-Rod) are getting the hammer is great to see. Here's hoping this is just a small step in a larger cleaning up of the game.

A-Rod will get the hammer because they have more stuff on him, but Braun got off light. Bad publicity and the reputation of a liar/bad person won't mean anything when he's back on Opening Day.

But its the same double-dealing, just on the reverse side. The Union was all for turning a blind eye to steroids when it was advantagous to them and their membership. Would you surmise that perhaps a majority of their membership was on some type of PED during the 1990's-2000's, thus the Union's complicitness with the cheaters?

I honestly don't. I think no matter what the peak of PED use in the 90s was, it's likely over 50% were probably still clean. I don't know that for a fact and I never will, I just don't believe it's as widespread as people think. I know there were the obvious, blatant cases that were supported by the union (Bonds, Sosa, McGwire, Giambi) but I don't believe it was a majority at any point.

Most will point to crazy home run numbers from a lot of random guys but much of that had to do with a "just-right" environment for that type of destruction. Pitching was at it's worst point in probably 40-50 years, ballparks were being built smaller and smaller and there's solid evidence the balls were being juiced or at the very least altered.

It's a big deal though because the union either A) turned their back on him or B) encouraged him to take the plea and admit.

This is obviously counter culture to what the union did under Fehr which was essentially head in sand or act like you don't know how to speak English. Dropping the hammer may not have been the right turn but it's a completely different game than it was 10 years ago as the non-PED users finally have union support as opposed to the other way around.

He's a baseball outcast for life. And these guys care about that. To me that's the real punishment. He'll never be viewed the same way again. His accomplishments will always be followed by "yeah, but...".

Which is really exclusive to baseball(well and cycling) but you don't see this in football. I personally don't think this helps baseball.

On the flip side, he is guaranteed to make $119 million between now and 2021. Financial incentives are still very much there for these guys to skirt the system. Public shaming and being disliked by your colleagues is not enough to outweigh that.
