Nats give Rizzo new contract, title

WASHINGTON -- Washington Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo has signed a new contract and been given the title of president of baseball operations.

The Nationals announced the deal in a news release on Thursday night, when the team did not have a game.

A year after winning the NL East and leading the major leagues with 98 wins, Washington is 52-56 and entered Thursday trailing the division-leading Atlanta Braves by 11 games.

Rizzo gained plenty of attention in 2012 for deciding to shut down pitcher Stephen Strasburg in September.

Rizzo was hired by the Nationals as an assistant GM in 2006, and was promoted to general manager in 2009.

The club called his new deal a "long-term contract" but did not specify its length.

Does this mean a new GM is coming?

He's the GM too. What else would you expect from Washington DC? Took a successful team and turned them in to a sub .500 team. He'll probably be made the mayor.
The king was shaken. He went up to the room over the gateway and wept.
As he went, he said: "O my son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom!
If only I had died instead of you
O Absalom, my son, my son!"

Billy Beane is part-owner of the A's as well as GM. I think he could probably do both, or else the assistant GM gets named the GM, but decisions still flow through Rizzo.

Settle down or you'll wind up with Bowden again.

Rizzo deserves this promotion for drafting Lucas Giolito alone.

He should lose his job for drafting Drew Storen instead of Mike Trout
