    Pittsburgh Pirates great Dave Parker is battling Parkinson's disease, according to a report.


    One of my favorite players as a kid. I liked his comment in the article about how he's had a great life, he's watched his kids grow up, etc. He was a power hitter who could hit for high average, and he had a cannon for an arm. His two throws in the 79 all-star game were two of the greatest throws in MLB history...

          LOL...I like the youtube commenter complaining that Gariagiola said nothing about Parker's throw. It was pretty ridiculous...Carter didn't really block the plate...Downing would have scored had Parker not made such a great throw.

              Love The Cobra. Had the strongest arm i've personally ever seen.

              I think he should be in Hall of Fame, but he's never getting in. Between about '75-'80 he was considered the best overall player in the game, and what's interesting is that in the second clip you hear the announcer say just that. That's stuff you can't read on a stat sheet and to me means more than just being really good for 15 years. He missed most of '81-'82 with injuries, and could never stay healthy. When he came back he could't run anymore and got fat, so his defense went in the shitter. But he still had that gun. He still managed over 2700 hits despite all of the lost time. Two batting titles, led the league in total bases several times, won an MVP, and his 7-year WAR peak matches up with other HOF RF's and would be higher had he not gotten hurt in his prime. And until the day he retired, he's a guy that gave you THE FEAR when he came to the plate.

                  I used to love watching Parker. Like W2BTD, I would vote Parker into the HoF, but I don't think it's ever going to happen.

                      This is how I would describe Parker to younger fans.

                      He swung violently like Juan Uribe, ran bases with the reckless abandon of Puig, and had an arm like prime Ichiro. And he was 6'5" 240 with speed.

                      Before he got hurt & fat he was a yearly threat to win the batting title, hit 30 homers, 40+ doubles, 20+ OF assists, and steal 20 bases. He played the game like he was on fire. He would make outs on the base paths and make lots of throwing errors, but he wasn't just an arm if you examine the range data pre injury. He covered a ton of ground and routinely led the league in wacky defensive range metrics.
