They have waiver priority and didn't claim Byrd or Morneau, giving the Pirates free reign to get better.

You realize you can't just say "I block!" and the players go back, right? What if Minnesota doesn't pull him back (which was a strong possibility)? The you're stuck with him. What the fuck are the Reds going to do with Morneau? Plus you have to pay him 100% of what he's owed, and pay the waiver claim fee.

You can make a better argument for Byrd/Buck because they don't make a lot of money, but again, what the hell are the Reds going to do with players like that? Byrd is having a nice year, but over a one month sample is he going to be appreciably better (or better at all) than Ludwick/Heisey? I doubt it. And even if the Reds were genuinely interested in Byrd, I sure as fuck wouldn't have given up a decent prospect for him the way Pittsburgh did.

Nice move by the Pirates. .831 OPS against righties. Gabby Sanchez hits lefties well. Good upgrade
The king was shaken. He went up to the room over the gateway and wept.
As he went, he said: "O my son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom!
If only I had died instead of you
O Absalom, my son, my son!"

Also should be noted, Morneau cleared waivers two weeks ago, when NOBODY claimed him. This wasn't a revocable waiver deal with Pittsburgh. So the Reds had no ability to "block" this, nor did anybody else. Twins were free & clear to trade him to anybody.

Twins first baseman Justin Morneau has cleared waivers, according to Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press (Twitter link). …

Really think Woy is overrating Morneau here, he's been pretty terrible this year.
