Poke around a bit, and you'll find trade rumors regarding embattled Brewers slugger Ryan Braun. After all, Braun's still in what should be his prime or near-prime seasons, but he could possibly benefit from a fresh start somewhere else. As well, the Brewers don't appear to be poised for contention, and they probably wouldn't mind shedding a chunk of the minimum $117 million he's still owed. With all that said, Brewers GM Doug Melvin is having none of it. Here's Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, who spoke to Melvin on the subject of Braun trade speculation:
Melvin said there was "absolutely nothing" to the rumor started on a blog in New York that the Brewers might be interested in trading Braun to the Mets, supposedly in a deal involving first baseman Ike Davis.
"We have no intentions of trading Ryan," said Melvin. "There's absolutely no truth to that. We've never contacted any team about Ryan."
Melvin said he did have "four or five clubs" ask about Braun's availability at the recent meeting of general managers in Orlando, Fla., and the Mets might have been one of them. Melvin wouldn't identify those teams but said it was basically probing to see if the Brewers would shop Braun.
"I told them no," said Melvin.
These situations are always somewhat fluid, of course, but Melvin certainly sounds heavily disinclined to shop his franchise player.
Braun, who turned 30 on Sunday, is coming off a season in which he batted .298/.372/.498 with nine homers in 61 games. He led the NL in home runs in 2012 and was the NL MVP in 2011. In late July of this year, Braun was of course suspended for the balance of the 2013 season because of his ties to the Biogensis/PED scandal.
