Carlos Beltran to Yankees- 3 years, $45 million

The Yankees have agreed to a three-year contract worth $45 million with Carlos Beltran, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com has confirmed. Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News first reported the news.

Beltran, 36, has made it no secret over the years that he one day wanted to play for the Yankees. He offered to sign with them at a discount before latching on with the Mets before 2005, and two years ago he gave New York a chance to match the two-year, $26 million he received from the Cardinals.

The Yankees, meanwhile, were reportedly holding firm at a two-year offer. The apparently decided to offer the third year after losing Robinson Cano to the Mariners. Beltran joins a crowded outfield that includes incumbents Brett Gardner, Ichiro Suzuki and Alfonso Soriano as well as newcomer Jacoby Ellsbury.

In 145 games for St. Louis in 2013, Beltran hit .296/.336/.491 (128 OPS+) with 24 home runs. He'll be able to split time between right field and DH with the Yankees, which fits best at this point of his career. Beltran had knee problems a few years ago but has stayed relatively healthy the last three seasons while playing in the DH-less league.

The Cardinals will receive a supplemental first round pick for losing Beltran. The Yankees will forfeit the supplemental first rounder they received for losing Cano as a result of adding Beltran. They lost their first rounder for signing Brian McCann and the supplemental pick they received for losing Curtis Granderson to the Mets when they agreed to sign Ellsbury.

I'm actually surprised the Royals didn't end up with Beltran, though I would imagine his representatives used that story to push negotiations.

It's nice that the Yankees are back to just lighting money on fire to build a winner.

It's not a bad deal, only 3 years at $15M per.

If he's good for the first two, it's a good deal. If he's good for all three years, it's a steal.

I'm speaking more to the method than this contract in particular. I don't like like the idea of Beltran getting $15M as a 39 year old, although he could feasibly still be a good offensive player in Yankee Stadium, but it's not awful.

Yeah, one year of barrel scraping Yankees was fun. You knew that wouldn't last.

So with Beltran in the fold, that gives the Yankees five outfielders on the roster- Beltran, Ellsbury, Soriano, Gardner and Ichiro. How do you guys see that playing out?

I personally see Gardner being traded- he's probably their best asset right now, and he's likely going to go for a starting pitcher. That puts Ellsbury in center, Beltran in left, Ichiro in right and Soriano as their DH, occasionally swapping out with Beltran.

I think they swap Gardner too, but I just had to mention that they also still have Wells under contract.

The Yanks would be stupid to let Beltran play the field. His bad knees and age have made him one of the worst fielders in the league out there.

Damnit I forgot about that. So that's a certainty that Gardner is traded.

They also need to work in occasional DH days for Soriano and McCann too though. Not sure who is worse now between the two "outfielders" in question but Mac should be able to handle 140 or so games behind the plate for another couple years at least.
