Mariners sign Corey Hart, trade for Morrison

ORLANDO - Free agent first baseman/outfielder Corey Hart is headed to Seattle to provide Robinson Cano protection in the batting order, as he has agreed to sign a one-year deal with the Mariners, according to Jon Heyman.

Hart, 31, missed all of the 2013 season with a right knee injury. In 2012, the two-time All-Star hit .270/.334/.507 with 35 doubles, 30 homers and 83 RBI.

He's played mostly right field in his career but played 103 games at first base in 2012. Due to his knee issue, he's likely best served at first base or even DH.

Hart was drafted by Jack Zduriencik in 2000 when Zduriencik was the director of amateur scouting for the Brewers. Now the GM of the Mariners, it's a reunion of sorts for Zduriencik and Hart.

As for the Brewers, they were waiting on a Hart decision for the past several days, and now they know they've lost out on retaining him. Thus, it's on to Plan B, which reportedly includes discussing trades for either Ike Davis or Logan Morrison or signing free agent James Loney.

The Mariners have acquired 1B/OF Logan Morrison from the Marlins in exchange for right-handed reliever Carter Capps. CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman confirms the original report of Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald.

Morrison, age 25, is coming off a 2013 season in which be batted .242/.333/.375 with six home runs in 85 games. For his career, he owns an OPS+ of 107 in two seasons. In 2011, Morrison tallied 23 home runs for the Marlins.

Capps, 23, has a 5.04 ERA and 2.76 K/BB ratio in 84 relief innings spread across two major-league seasons. In those 84 innings, he's recorded 94 strikeouts, but he's also allowed 12 home runs.

Earlier on Wednesday, CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman reported that the Mariners came to terms with free agent Corey Hart. As such, this means that one of Hart or Morrison will likely man a corner outfield spot in Seattle.

Mariners are still the 3rd best team in the division, solid effort though.

Probably my two least favorite players. Mariners are OFF my mlb.tv watch list.
