The New York Yankees have designated veteran outfielder Vernon Wells for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster for other signings, a source told ESPN's Buster Olney.
A three-time All-Star, Wells hit .233 with 11 homers and 50 RBIs last year after totaling just 36 homers and 95 RBIs in two previous seasons with the Los Angeles Angels.
Wells was traded to the Yankees by the Angels before the start of last season for two minor leaguers, outfielder Exircado Cayones and left-hander Kramer Sneed.
The Angels gave New York $9.5 million as part of the $42 million Wells was owed over the final two seasons of the $126 million, seven-year deal he signed with the Toronto Blue Jays.
