Tanaka to Yankees- seven years, $155 million

The Yankees and Japanese starting pitcher Masahiro Tanaka have agreed on a seven-year, $155 million deal, reports Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.

Lots of cash for Tanaka, surprised that another team didn't try to take it higher. But the Yankees could have matched that I feel. I honestly see them as the favorite in the East right now.

The rest of the market should fall within the week on starting pitching. Jimenez and Garza should be able to find work by then.

And the Orioles are going to bring in Brett Tomko for a workout. Yeah, that's sure going to keep up with the Yankees.

Might have to buy the whole series when the Yankees come to Milwaukee.

            Holy overpay batman

Jeez . . . that's a lot of money. That's more than Yu Darvish got even if you include the posting fee.
The king was shaken. He went up to the room over the gateway and wept.
As he went, he said: "O my son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom!
If only I had died instead of you
O Absalom, my son, my son!"

He's not as good as Yu, probably closer to Kuroda. On its face this is a severe overpay, but the reality is that this is the new market for high revenue clubs. Plus the Yankees were desperate.

Losing $58 million in ticket revenue last season alone will do that to a team. The Yankees were definitely desperate to go back to their old ways and bring in a slew of players via FA. Not sure how it's going to work out, but at least they don't have the A-Rod distraction on the field.

Half a billion spent this offseason, and they'll have Kelly Johnson and Brian Roberts playing everyday. Tanaka is their only player who will be under 30 on Opening Day.

They need a starting pitcher badly, went out and got a unproven guy in the MLB for a boat load of money. Just hope he can be good.

Starting rotation now looks like CC, Tanaka, Kuroda, Nova and Pineda (If we is healthy) or Phelps

Pretty solid rotation now, wonder how CC will do after losing all that weight.

I'm sure there are a couple pitchers like Nova, but you're right on that. They'll be paying for that in a few years, but by then other contracts will be off the books and they will do the same thing.

Again, losing $58 million (and that was just in ticket revenue, nothing else) will make a club like the Yankees do this.

Fingers crossed that this works. If they want to recoup that $58 mil then they need to put together a serious contender. Not sure this is the answer, but it should help. Team is still too old, has lots of health issues. We'll see...again, fingers crossed.

Honestly, they are my favorite to win the division, provided the team stays healthy and Tanaka does close to what people are projecting. The problem is the age as you said. I could see a September fade and a team that isn't strong come playoff time, which could lead to an early exit.

Way too much money, but the winning team was going to overpay for Tanaka anyways. I still don't think the Yanks are better than the Red Sox and Rays.

That's also tied to age. And it's still a strong division. To win the division, CC will have to bounce back, Nova will have to pitch well again (and start more than 20 games) AND Tanaka will have to be a top of the rotation guy like everyone keeps trying to tell me he will. Don't think the bats will carry them this year.
