I'm saying baseball is really stupid and this kid might be the $50M a year breakthrough. Every other pro sport, for the most part, has a semblance of sanity ... baseball not so much. You get bad contracts in all pro sports, but they seem more insane in MLB.

They are insane in MLB because of the guaranteed money and no salary cap. Yeah, in the NFL the Redskins made a huge mistake by giving Haynesworth $100 million. But they really only had him make $36 million, which was the guaranteed money. After the guaranteed money is paid out in most NFL contracts (usually through 2-3 years) the remainder of the contract jumps in terms of salary. The player can then be cut and lose that money, or renegotiate their deal.

If Dave ran the angels, they would make a lot more Vernon Davis type deals.

Your point was that he would make $50 million, except that is nowhere near accurate. Only one MLB player has made over $30mil/year (well, two with Kershaw now), yet somehow we would jump all the way up to $50 million?

The record contract until recently was $26.2M per year I believe, with Alex Rodriguez. Trout isn't going to jump all the way to $50M when teams are trying to stay under $189M. We won't see $50M until the value of the dollar is cut in half, that is, it won't happen for quite a long time.

I assume you mean Vernon Wells. That said, I wouldn't build teams with high-priced recruited talent. My Philadelphia Eagles proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that model doesn't work. I would do what the Yankee teams of the early Jeter days did ... build a base by spending like a mofo on scouting, farm system, etc...

Simply spending your way to titles rarely works.

That said, Vernon Davis is a helluva talent for the Niners.

I bet you a free video game (seriously), some idiotic team pays a player $50 million a year by 2016. I'll get your info and buy it for you on Amazon. Seriously.

The New York Yankees also proved that method does not work.

                      Being serious, Youk.

A few years ago a fellow VSN member got laid off while we were all taking about playing the latest NCAA Football game. Said he couldn't justify buying the game because of his situation. He was a very popular poster at the time, I told him to send me his personal info. I Amazon gifted him the game. It wasn't charity. I said if you get back in a good position, just pay me back. He did.

I'm not doubting you. I'm just shocked you would think someone will grab $50 million/year in the next 2 seasons, when there is nothing that can possibly backup that viewpoint.

The insanity of baseball and economics.

But there isn't much insanity. Only two players have hit $30 million/year, and it took 5 years to get that 2nd player. Somehow we will add $20 million to a contract within 2 years?

Who would even get this contract by then?

There really is no insanity. Players(for the most part) get paid their fair market value, and it has only gone up as inflation has gone up. We are just starting to see $30M contracts, $50M isn't coming anytime soon.

It could still be Trout. He hasn't agreed to anything yet.
