Cardinals sign Carpenter to $52 million extension

The Cardinals have signed third baseman Matt Carpenter to a contract extension that will pay him $52 million over six years, CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman has learned. The contract also includes an option for 2020.

Carpenter, 28, is coming off a 2013 season in which he batted .318/.392/.481 (143 OPS+); led the majors in runs scored, hits and doubles (55) and finished fourth in the NL MVP balloting. Carpenter did all that despite his playing a full season at the highest level for the first time and his manning second base on a regular basis for the first time as a professional. This season, Carpenter will switch back to third base.

For his career, Carpenter owns a line of .306/.381/.470 (135 OPS+) across parts of three major-league seasons. The Cardinals originally drafted Carpenter out of TCU with a 13th-round pick in 2009.
