Cards call up top prospect Taveras

According to the sources of veteran baseball reporter Rob Rains, the Cardinals will soon call up top prospect Oscar Taveras.

Taveras, age 21, is presently batting .325/.373/.525 with seven homers and 15 doubles in 49 games for Triple-A Memphis. Taveras, whom the Cardinals signed out of the Dominican Republic in 2008, was ranked as the no. 3 overall prospect in baseball prior to this season by MLB.com and Baseball America. Across parts of six minor-league seasons, Taveras is a career .321/.377/.519 hitter, and he's authored those numbers despite being significantly younger than his peer group at every stop.

While Taveras is best suited to an outfield corner, he's capable of manning center. If he's indeed on his way to St. Louis, then don't be surprised if he's shifted around the outfield. Also of note is that starting June 4, the Cardinals will play seven straight road games against AL teams. As such, they'll have the DH spot available for one of their spare outfielders
