    Tony Gwynn Dead @ 54

No cause of death yet but assume it's related to the cancer he was diagnosed with in his jaw four years ago.

Tony Gwynn Jr. talked with CSN Philly about his father for a story yesterday.

“He’s a fighter,” Tony Jr. said. “He’s going to battle it out, but please keep him in your prayers.”

There will be nothing uncomfortable about it when Tony Gwynn Jr. calls home and tells his Pops, “I love you,” this Father’s Day. It will be strong and clear and he will repeat it every day until next Father’s Day and the one after that and the one after that …

“This hasn’t been the easiest year for the Gwynn family, but we’ll make it through,” he said.

RIP. Was one of the few baseball players I idolized growing up. Prayers are with his family.

Great player, great person, the game of baseball will miss him. Probably the last player that will give .400 any serious threat.

Gwynn's 1994 season is one of the most underrated in history. Nearly hits .400 at age 34. Didn't get nearly the hype that George Brett's 1980 season got.

Say what you want about all the big bats of the modern era...but a Tony Gwynn at bat was basically watching a batting clinic. He and Wade Boggs were the best Ive ever seen at putting any pitch anywhere anytime into play or fouled off almost at will. Gwynn probably fatigued more pitchers than any other hitter post color tv.
Best reason to have a license.

Who was the better hitter...Tony Gwynn or Wade Boggs?

I'd go with Boggs, but I don't think you can go wrong with either player. Both were superior at the time they played, and both had longevity and still performed at a high level until they were at the end.
