Gambler Claims 13 Refs Involved in NBA Betting Scandal

I can't wait to hear David "Spin Doctor" Stern's take on this.

James Battista, a gambler, says he and Tim Donaghy bet on 47 N.B.A. games, 31 more than Donaghy acknowledged in a plea bargain.

I've been trying to tell you guys...this kind of stuff is no secret in east coast gambling circles. NBA refs are dirty, and have been for many years.

      Not a shocker imo.

      The Golden Turducken
Season 1: 11-5 (Super Bowl Champion)
Season 2: 12-4 (NFC West Champion)

      Season 3: 9-4

I'd be shocked if it was only 13.

Yep. To me there is no other way to explain how NBA refs are so awful at what they do. They are by far the worst out of the 4 major sports. It's laughable.

How can the NBA go about and not talk about this?

            Did they even investigate?

Stern has quite a bit of power...hence why this isn't getting a ton of press.

This past week Donaghy implied that Michael Jordan's retirement was really a "banishment" stemming from his own gambling problems.

I'm sure someone's brought that up before. Interesting stuff.

                  joey crawford?
"From the time he hits the court, he plays at a competitive level that you rarely see," Popovich says. "He does the exact same things that Kobe (Bryant) does, that Michael Jordan did.

Yeah, of course it has. The first retirement has long been rumored to have been a secret gambling suspension. Tons of people have talked about that.

It's the reason his father was gunned down.

This topic makes me think back to that Kings/Lakers playoff series some years ago

Even before all this betting stuff came to light, I always thought what they did to the Kings smelled

That series and the Mavs/Heat finals never sat well with me.

I always heard that, but I wrote it off as urban legend.

Yeah, I mean who knows, but we had a pretty famous Chicago journalist from that time come talk to one of my classes. He may or may not have written a book about Jordan ;)

As everyone was leaving I kind of pulled him to the side and asked about it and he wouldn't say 100% but that it was more true than false.

A lot of the evidence kind of works out. I'll never say 100% but it seems very logical. The NBA wrapped up a investigation into wagering a mere 3 days after Jordan retired. There were people that came out talking about Jordan betting and losing money with checks to prove it.

Yep......Stern's trying to wave a dismissive hand at Donaghy, but they did that to Canseco too.....we see how that turned out
